Legal Primer For Open Source And Free Software

Important to understand legal issues revolving around open source and free software.

A Legal Issues Primer for Open Source and Free Software Projects: All software is subject to copyright law. The moment you save code to a file, copyright law gives you certain rights to control what other people can do with your work. Because almost everybody who contributes code to a software project has rights with respect to their code, understanding the basics of copyright is essential to running a FOSS project.

From a good report on Mix08.

This session felt like a recap session on some of the technologies the client-side AJAX support. I am constantly impressed by the javascript intellisense support that is avialble inpeople are already using in their day-to-day development. You can see his own recounting of the session here. He talked about Muti-targeting, CSS support and LINQ to SQL for data access. He next walked through a pretty simple example of using a server-side UpdatePanel to reduce screen flicker.

Too bad about the lack of Linux support, but at least Firefox works.

Visiting the Microsoft Office Live Workspace promises to allow users to store as many a 1000 documents online and share them with colleagues. Sounds good. Unless you try and sign up for the free service and you’re running Linux. If you are running Linux then you’ll be greeted with a screen informing you that you’ll need to be running a version of Windows or MacOSX and either Internet Explorer or Firefox (good to see Firefox in there).

Website Success

From a series of posts on successful website ideas.

Second, Facebook. Why is Facebook so popular? Once again, it’s simple: curiousity, jealousy, etc. People love to check up on friends, show off to friends, etc. More so than anything, the Photos application has made Facebook what it is today. Knowing where and when you’re being tagged, along with the ability to find pictures of your friends is, simply put, completely targeted at human emotions. People can’t help but use it. THAT is compelling content. And best of all, it’s user-generated, AJAX-validated (ie, it fills in names based on your existing friends list) and virtually maintenance free. It’s really the perfect idea for traffic generation.

A survey of this blogger's 500 posts.

My most popular post is Test Driven Development with ASP.Net and the Model View Presenter Pattern, which is a bit ironic because I've even put up a warning message on that post pushing people to look at MonoRail or the MVC framework instead of the MVP pattern for web development. A couple months after that I read the Pragmatic Programmer's book on Ruby on Rails and I've hated that ASP.NET post ever since. If I had to pick my favorite post, I'd go with My Programming Manifesto.
