Gmail Shows Related Pages In Sidebar!
It’ll be cool if Google tells the publishers about it or at least clarifies about that how are they selecting the sources of the related pages section of the Gmail sidebar.

Email Replacement
Is email broken? I think most people would agree that the situation with email is at best uncomfortable, and at worst downright unusable for some people. I have been using email for about 20 years now, as I had an email account (via packet radio) way before the web was around (the Internet predates the web, anyone remember Gopher?). And at Universities we’ve had good email for a long time. I am lucky, as here at UWE we now have several levels of spam filtering that can be deployed, and I have my own at the client level as well. That means I see very little of the spam that some people get. I also use Gmail, and the spam filtering in that is excellent. But, for the majority of people, its a downright mess.

Mobile Gmail In Japan
But, according to Markezine (in Japanese), Google Japan now offers mobile Gmail; namely, Docomo, AU, and Softbank. Yes, Softbank, which is strongly affiliated with Yahoo Japan. I used to afraid Google might be more integrated with AU; but glad to see they include docomo and rival softbank, even.

Nuevo Yahoo! Correo

I was shocked, simply shocked.

The Email Rabbit
In search of using calm technology in our project, we have come up with a friendly-looking stuffed-rabbit that speaks out your gmail, according to your preset preferences on the web. This way, you do not have to solely rely on your personal computer to retrieve your emails. The user has the freedom to preset the importance of his emails, and categorize them as well as be alerted when a new email is received. They can also have personal messages recorded, allowing for the voice to be transmitted. Essentially, we have chosen to use RF (Radio Frequency) as a method to transmit and receive data between the doll and the internet, and a set of walkie talkies to output the emails using Text-to-speech technology, while also allowing for the use of personal speech. Radio Frequency can travel up to 125ft and the walkie talkies transmit and receive up to a distance of 5 miles.

Review: Yahoo! Mail Beta
After surfing across Lifehacker’s post about how to easily get a Yahoo! Mail Beta account, I decided to take it for a spin. Following those directions was easy enough and I found myself with a new Y! Mail Beta account within 5 minutes. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had seen screenshots of the fancy interface, which was purported to mimic a desktop email client, floating around the internet months before. Hopefully Yahoo has their eyes set on the future with mail beta and plan on setting themselves apart from Google and their popular Gmail.

I found the UI of Google lame, for sure it’s been well engineered with Ajax deftly applied, but the fundamental ‘what you can see on the screen’ Vs. ‘what you can’t and scroll / click for’ is all wrong. Ironic, since their email (Gmail) is drop-dead gorgeous.

Google Calendar
Well as predicted, Calendars would be a big thing, in a previous post Google are just about to realease a calendar application called CL2 according to TechCrunch. The interface is similar to GMail so it'll get huge uptake as people are used to it. I guess the main question I have is can you get to it using a Web Service or API because you could use this calendar system to add, edit, insert and then pull out the information using RSS.

Podcast: Architecting Ajax Applications
A Ajax application is an implementation where a user would have no expectation to be able to copy URLs and interact with the applicatoin using many of the web conventions. GMail is an excellent example of this. Should you choose to forward an email to a friend, you wouldn't copy the URL.

Blogging An E-mail
Today I wrote an e-mail to Becky using links, like I am doing during this very blog. It made writing the e-mail more fun because if I was unsure whether or not she would know of something or someone in my e-mail, I just linked to that thing or person. For example, I told her about a dream I had where Christopher Walken was a conquistador. I linked “Christopher Walken” to a page listing his works from Internet Movie Data Base, and conquistador to a web site about Spanish Conquistadors. Not only did writing in this way serve as a means of information, it was also fun. I linked normal words to online dictionary definitions and wikipedia entries. I wrote about a friend of ours and linked to a picture of her on my blog. I did it using gmail, but I bet other mail services enable linking as well. I strongly recommend that everyone try it.

I’ve had this installed for a couple of days now and it works pretty well! I tested it by posting a meme to my LJ account. Well, that didn’t turn out too well as it didn’t read the code for the meme correctly. Other than that, it’s pretty nifty for just basic blogging itself. You will get a small icon at the bottom of your browser window, next to the Gmail notifier, if you use it. You just click it and a small window will pop up which you can move up and down to still see the main Firefox window.

The Trouble With AJAX
While everyone is busy implementing AJAX on every webpage they administer, and while I do not deny the beautiful simplicity and aesthetic design of an AJAX powered page (just look at how nice Gmail is to use, with instant marking of read/unread messages; or how nice the IPB 2.1 registration page is..) everyone seems to have forgotten something about the original foundations of AJAX. What it is, how it works, why it is not necessarily the best of ideas… In short, why it is best left well alone.

PITA Project
Moving e-mail from POP3 or IMAP to Gmail is not exactly an easy thing … nor particularly clean. It seems that, no matter what you try, there’s not a way to maintain the original message date/time stamping. So, transferred stuff ends up as “newer” than your new mail, if that makes any sense.

Don't Look Down
Ok. Yeah the whole @aol.com is a great reference. What about @gmail.com? If I was working with someone on something technical and they didn’t have a gmail account (even if they don’t use it) I would think they are kind of weird. In no way would I look ‘down’ at them because they had a Shared email account. Blogspot, typepad are fine services. Many well-know people use these services because it meets their needs.

As you know that hotmail only gave 2MB of free space for non-US users, so, I’m going to talk about how to get 25MB instead of 2MB, later the 25MB of free space will become 250MB if you stay active in next 30 days.

RoundCube Webmail
I recently heard about a new webmail client from my friend Justin, who’s infatuated with it. RoundCube, a “browser-based multilingual IMAP client with an application-like user interface,” is the latest and greatest webmail client. It’s only in the alpha stage of development, which explains the jagged installation procedures, but that doesn’t mean it can’t kick some major squirrels. RoundCube is much smaller, scalable, and less resource intensive than another competitor, Zimbra, which weighs in at 150 megabytes. The interface is the stunning with lots of AJAX magic as well as user configurable via XHTML and CSS 2 skinning. I love RoundCube so much, I’m declaring it better than Gmail. Yes, you read that correctly. Hopefully by the end of this article you will have a fully functioning RoundCube webmail client on your server.

Flock
Today I stumbled upon Flock, which is basically Firefox's cousin that likes to keep in touch with everyone. It is built off of the same code (Mozilla) so you know its rock solid, though they underpromise. Well it is really good at helping you keep track of sites through starring, which makes a tag and a comment, and then you continue surfing. The star is like gmail, when you star a favorite message, though it uses del.icio.us (stores a list of your favorite sites online). The next thing that is cool is integrated flickr (online photo album) which goes best with the integrated blog, in my case blogger. You get a window that you can drag flickr images in, create tags for organization and searchability.

Delayed Email
I don’t know what is going on right now but email is arriving up to 22 hours late to my inbox. Well, 22 hours as of yet so it must have started at about 8pm last night. I would think there might be a reason for this if it were email going through my hosting provider or something, but this is gmail! I’m going crazy! I don’t know whether people aren’t emailing me or if the emails just haven’t gotten to my inbox.

Advantage: AJAX
Kayko (Parmeshwar) and I were discussing about Gmail and Yahoo interfaces … and both agreed that AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript + XML) components indeed provide Gmail the upper hand. In AJAX, only user interface elements that contain new information are updated; the rest of the user interface remains displayed without interruption. Also the request/response can be asynchronous, disconnecting user interaction from server interaction. As a result, the user can continue to use the application while the client program requests information from the server in the background. When new information arrives, only the related user interface portion is updated.

Google Reader Launched
Meeting the Web 2.0 critereon Google Reader is in Beta, and probably will be for at least a year - so I'm not complaining - and with the development of this service we may see closer links emerging (and disappearing) between email and RSS. In other words, if gmail eventually offers RSS subscription services I can get rid of my email subscriptions, replace them with RSS subscriptions - and hopefully do what all readers I've seen so far don't do - archive content!

ThinkFree
A little while ago I blogged about the fact that I now use Gmail for all my email and Bloglines for my RSS feeds. The thing I noted that was missing was the ability to write documents and sotre files online.
Well, that day has come. Take a look at ThinkFree office. It’s a nice set of MS office compatible apps that all run online through java. You get online storage thrown in too.

Gmail 'Unread' Label Tip
I was recently going through a nice list of Gmail Tips maintained by Jim Barr, it has a lot of useful tips out of which tip 25 tells you how you can create a label named "Unread" which automatically displays all the mails which are not yet read by you (not just in inbox or just in one label, but in your full email account). But when I tried creating such a label gmail didn't allow me, so I tried creating a label named "Unread2" and then tried renaming it to "Unread" that's when I got a message saying "System specific label names are not allowed. Please try another label".

Ideal OS
Regarding to latest Ajax applications I believe in a few years average user will not need operating system any more. Even today we read mail over the web (Gmail, Outlook Web Access), we can write in a quite good editor (FreeTextBox, ...), there are available Excel like applications, calculators, image editing, document and image sharing applications... It is possible that in few years we would carry around only a key from where latest browser application will start up on any Internet connected computer.

Gmail Attachment Storage
Social computing theories are about looking at the way computers are used and changing the design to better suit those needs. A good example of this is how google's gmail stores attachments. It would be easy to add 10000 more hard drives so everyone could have 1GB of email but that doesnt "solve" the problem, so what they do is they store ONE copy of an attachment and everybody "shares" that copy. Think about it... how often do you send the same silly video to like 1000 people, why have 1000 copies. Now, multiply that by the ENTIRE WORLD of internet users. You see the savings quickly.

Email Comparison
Apparently, AOL is releasing a 2 GB webmail service for its AIM users. I could care less: I use GAIM (so I wouldn’t get the alerts for new messages), and GMail is superior in almost every way imaginable. Personally, I think this is without purpose for the general public. It is horrible compared to its competition, there is nothing unique about it, and its just flat out not worth the time and effort.

AJAX Not Cool
AJAX is JavaScript based and JavaScript is usually used to add convenience and to pretty up web pages. Because sites had to work without JavaScript, usage was limited to extending the HTML or saving on the odd page request. Then came GMail. Suddenly we have lot’s of web developers “enhancing” the browser experience with behind the scenes XML fetching back to the original site. I cannot think of a worse collision of technologies than low level user interfaces with requests over the internet. The delays and failures of internet traffic...

No More Invitations
So we have My Yahoo that everyone knows all about, but now Google has Google Personalized. It is still in beta, but it is a step in the right direction. As soon as they put RSS feeds in, it will be really nice. But the reason I put this is that you can now get a Gmail account. You don't have to have an invite from someone or anything. You just have to go here and then go to Sign in and get an account. Gmail is nice and getting nicer.

GMail Illegal In Germany
A German court ruled it illegal for Google to use the email domain “gmail.com”, as Golem reports. Google already changed their email’s name to “Google Mail" for German users, but the gmail.com extension prevails so far – now the state court of Hamburg said Google may not offer emails with this extension to German users. Daniel Giersch owns the trademark “Gmail” in Germany and isn’t willing to give up easily. He already rejected an offer from Google to buy the name from him, Giersch said on Golem. I wonder if he should truly have any more rights than to the domain Gmail.de?

On GMail's Spam Filter
So, back to GMail - never before has it put an email from a private address in the Spam folder. However, on this occasion an email request for private assistance went directly in there. Now, I want you to know that I have never hit the "Report Spam" button on any email like this, so I have never trained it for these emails. Google Hacks 2nd edition
I have just finished reading the 2nd edition of Google Hacks (2005), by Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest. This edition is packed with new hacks and new ways to use Google. Most of the hacks require the ability to use code, but some of them can be used from the web. This edition includes chapters on Google Images, News, Groups, Desktop, and Gmail. Two examples of what I learned: Gmail supports plus-addressing, which I was not familiar with. Using this, you add a + to your Gmail address, to create a special Gmail address to use for web sign-ins, etc....

Can't Load Google
I have been encountering a weird problem lately. At times, my browsers (IE and Firefox) won’t load google and gmail. When this happens, the load time of other search engines slow down as well. Could there be some kind of a spyware in my PC? Or is this is a server problem? This is Google’s specialty: a simple, easy to use interface, accessible to all levels of users. Though there is no indication that anything like this is in the works, one can easily imagine a streamlined Google OS on its own hard disk partition, separated from the entertainment, gaming, and media production environments. In addition to Google’s signature services—a high-powered internet, media, and local disk search engine—it would likely consist of an office suite, a lean web browser, and various other applications and utilities....

Yahoo! 360: A Great Start
What was really fun (OK, not so fun) was sending out invites to all of the people who had requested them (sorry, I’m out of them so far – turns out you only get 100). I noted something interesting there – a preponderance of gmail.com addresses. So I counted and this is what I got: 22% of requesters had Gmail accounts, 18% had a Yahoo! email address, and 3% had hotmail.com domains. Interestingly, there was one person with a Yahoo! email and MSN Spaces personal Web site – I have a feeling he/she will be changing...

Adobe and gmail
In Jason’s roundup of the Adobe-Macromedia acquisition, he alludes to Tim Bray’s comment that Adobe may drop Flash, and proffers Ajax as an alternative for web developers — a bit of jumping the gun, if you ask me.
Last fall, Kevin Lynch, the Chief Architect of Macromedia, asked to meet with me regarding my work on the Gmail API, under the guise of hinting at potential employment opportunities in the Experience Design group *. Essentially, he and his associate, an ex-Microsoft guy they poached from the ASP.NET group, wanted to know how the Gmail Ajax system worked, and how it worked so quickly. We also covered their new Flex platform, their take on the Lazlo project (supportive, but would ultimately rather see all efforts focused on Flex), and uses of the XML socketing support that was introduced in Flash 5.

Google GMail Adds RSS Web Clips
This is a really great new gmail feature:
Google has definately been behind Yahoo when it comes to RSS integration and RSS feed reading with Yahoo adding an RSS feed aggregator to MyYahoo and implementing feeds into custom versions of the new Yahoo News layout. However, Google has taken a step into RSS feed reading with implementation of Google Web Clips into the GMail interface.

Greasemonkey + Google = Chaos
The Gmail account I run in Firefox with Greasemonkey running + Arantius' Gmail 'delete button' script + Persistent.info's 'persistent searches' for Gmail functions very weirdly. It won't open the Gmail Help window, for example, and in "email composition" mode it won't add hyper-links to text. Disable Greasemonkey, and therefore these two scripts, and all is fine again.
In IE, running Google's latest Google Toolbar, I can't now get beyond 'Loading' when opening a Gmail account. (I used to have no problem, but I guess Google is tweaking Gmail all the time.) Temporarily remove the Google Toolbar, and the Gmail account loads.
This is very quick, on-the-hoof feedback, but it would seem that messing around with browsers and web-services that run therein will create problems for end-users. If even Google isn't getting this right … A pity: I really like those two Firefox/Greasemonkey Gmail scripts.

Photoblogging With gmail
I eventually found John Blade’s version of the Wordpress mail2blog script. I ended up editing it a bit, and along with some stunnel’ing and a new (secret!!) gmail account, I now have phone2blog functionality too… The pic of the bike was just a test, (Apparently it’s the first and only Ninja ZX-6R in the country at the moment…) and it’s standing right outside the offices where I work.

Google Maps
Google hasn't been just a search engine for a long time. In addition to Gmail (which I use), Orkut (friend of a friend software), Picasa (photo organization), and Froogle (online shopping index), they've been upgrading their Maps feature like crazy. Recently they've added the ability to view a map or a satellite view and opened the API (to help programmers) which resulted in at least one amazing hack.

Moving Out of the Land of Black and White
Just saw this interesting bit when I logged into my Gmail account a few minutes ago. I don't think it's an April Fools Joke. Like this is.
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more.
Fonts, bullets and highlighting, oh my! Gmail now offers rich text formatting. And over 60 colors of the rainbow. Discover a land of more than just black and white.

Gmail Screens Spam
In a post on January 26 I mentioned that I had just scored a Gmail address and was about to install that as the contact email for this blog.
This has worked well and although there has been some spam, Gmail has been very good indeed, so far, in intercepting the spam and corralling it into a spam folder for checking and deletion. Makes Outlook seem a very blunt instrument in comparison.
I could become quite a fan of Gmail!

Google's Hegemony
Describing the Yahoo-Google face off, Havoc recently put it, “Google is trying to be Yahoo and Yahoo is trying to be Google”, in their race to be the one-stop shop for everything online. Although Yahoo did significantly better in regards operating profits and service reliability, Google is stealing all the limelight. Anything the company does, it rakes in oodles of publicity, for e.g. the latest integration of Google Maps with Keyhole technology that lets you view...

Gmail blogging tool
Jonathan Hernandez, a Mexican programmer, has figured out how to turn Google’s Gmail service into a blog.
Using Gmail messages as the blog comments, Gallina uses XML & XSLT to convert the emails into a blog.
Google may not be happy about the tool though, their terms of use for Gmail specify that screen scraping is not allowed. This type of technology is how Gallina functions.

Gmail Close to Rollout?

Thinking Outside the Box? What Box?
For instance, Google, with their Gmail product, is attempting to redefine how we access our e-mail, how we store it and where we store it. The idea being that we should have virtually limitless e-mail storage, on a centralized server, available from anywhere, able to be accessed through any browser or client, with threaded or context based views of topics and that we should not have to file it into folders because it is able to be searched by sender, subject and content so therefore retrieved very quickly....

The Other Kind of Web-App Plug-in
OK, that’s ehm, well… that sounds nice in theory, but does it have much practical applications? It appears that it has, and when I saw it, it blew me away. Some guy succeeded in adding persistent searches to Gmail. Nearly every normal mail client has those these days, sometimes they’re called smart folders or vFolders; what they do is the same: create a “folder” that contains all the mail matching certain criteria. For example all the mail you received...
After installing Greasemonkey in Firefox and installing the user script this what it looks like when you visit your Gmail mailbox:
The searches are performed instantly and can be updated by pressing the little refresh button at the top-right of the box. When you click one of the persistent searches it will show the result in the usual search-result fashion. You can also add new persistent searches. Only drawback is that the searches are stored in a cookie, so they’re not there if you login to Gmail with another computer.

Ringo Reviewed
Ringo is an interesting new service from Monster Worldwide, Inc. It is essentially little more than an online address book, but what makes it note worthy, is the comprehensive import features it has, which allow you to import contacts from MSN, Hotmail, GMail and AOL. Once it’s grabbed the addresses from you accounts it compares them to existing Ringo members, and if people aren’t already a member it allows you to send out an invite to them, so they can enter their own information. This is a nice touch,...

Gmail Infinity
Gmail has recently rolled out a new feature; they plan on giving “Infinity + 1” storage to all their users. Their reasoning is that as technology and the internet improves, people will need more and more storage. With the increase in storage space, larger attachment sizes should follow as well. Less known, but just as impressive is the addition of rich text formatting. Not only does the script work in Netscape type browsers such as Mozilla and Firefox, but also brings it up to...

April Fools
did anyone happen to see google yesterday (april fool’s day)? it was funny. they were advertising a new google product - a drink. the frequently asked questions about it were just ripping google and gmail off (as in google ripping itself off). some of the slashdot posts were kinda funny too. especially how the u.n. is banning apple computers cos the apple symbol isn’t based on the apple-growing region in the south of france.

Gmail's Infinity + 1!
Looks like Gmail is rolling out an upgrade on 1st of April. It is now increasing the mail storage space by the second according to their infinity + 1 plan. Check out its progress at the Gmail homepage. If you are already logged in, you can log out to see the increasing counter and then log in to see the total amount of storage space you have at the bottom of the page. Pretty niffty.
Directly from GMail: “Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn’t mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we’re giving everyone one more gigabyte. You know a browser is starting to mature when you can get the tools you need and use on a daily basis. This is a small collection of search tools now available for Firefox.
Googlebar
This extension now allows all Firefox users to make use of the Google Toolbar. The GoogleBar emulates all the basic search functions allowing access to almost all of Google’s specialty searches (including some that not even supported by the original Google Toolbar).
