Microsoft Makes Online Office Play

Too bad about the lack of Linux support, but at least Firefox works.

Visiting the Microsoft Office Live Workspace promises to allow users to store as many a 1000 documents online and share them with colleagues. Sounds good. Unless you try and sign up for the free service and you’re running Linux. If you are running Linux then you’ll be greeted with a screen informing you that you’ll need to be running a version of Windows or MacOSX and either Internet Explorer or Firefox (good to see Firefox in there).

Explorer 8 Vs. Firefox 3

A good comparison on new versions of Firefox and IE.

CSSVista: Edit your CSS Code Live

Tips on testing CSS code on Firefox and IE.

Then came the Firefox Web Developer Toolbar, and things started to get a whole lot easier. The Firefox Firebug extension and the IE Web Developer Toolbar let you work interactively with the the two main browsers, albeit one at a time. I usually pick one or the other, get a design working, and verify / fix it in the other browser.

Internet Explorer Pierde Casi Un 10% De Cuota En Un Año

A look at browser marketshare over the past year.

Safari's RSS Puzzle

Prefering Safari to Firefox here.

Every few months I get tired of Firefox chewing memory and hanging every 2-3 days, and decide to return to Safari. It’s a dilemma: Safari’s speed, elegance, and stability, or Firefox’s wealth of plugins? For now, I’m going to put speed and stability first and make Safari primary again. I can switch over when I need to do something Safari can’t do.

Haute Secure

A look at the features of a new malware filter that works on IE and (soon) on Firefox.
In short, Haute Secure is a Malware Filter, much like a Phishing or Spam Filter in existing applications. It provides a beautiful (you really have to see it!) interface and toolbar to IE (and soon Firefox) which protects users from incoming malware on a variety of levels, starting from the site level to the execution level. If cnn.com were to be hacked tomorrow with an unreleased exploit that would attempt to download a worm or other malware on visitors’ machines, Haute would be able to detect that, and block the exploit from happening.

Coolplayer Embeds Cell Phone Video

If you're getting your video online, check out the coolplayer plugin for wordpress ... tested with Firefox!

The width and height can be modified to any size you want. The autoplay feature and looping can be turned on and off by using “true” or “false”. So far, I tested it on my old mac in Firefox and Safari. It works in Firefox, but not so well in Safari, in fact, not at all in Safari. All I see is the static quicktime logo sitting there, all quiet, taunting me. If your on a windows machine, I’d like to know if you’re able to play the clip.

El Efecto Digg

A Firefox dig in a post about Digg in Latin America.

Linux RSS Clients Don't Cut It

Not happy with Firefox RSS extensions, either.

When in Windows I use FeedDemon and have used many others; but I like FeedDemon and pretty well live in it :). I can’t say the same for any of the offerings I have seen or tried for Linux. I even tried a couple of the ones that are available as Firefox extensions but I never liked them in Windows and that feeling hasn’t changed on this side of the bridge either.

To celebrate the launch of Firefox2.0, Mozilla foundation held the Firefox summit 2006 at Mountain View office, the headquarter near Google office. As I know, this is the second time that this summit is held. It's great that I can have such a chance to be here, get to know some guys who I only know the nickname from the IRC channel or the bugzilla. To share some idea with some other guys who can't be here, I'd like to draft some stuff in the following days. Hope it helpful.

My Quick Internet Explorer 7 Review

Tabbed browsing makes it from Firefox to IE7.

I like the tabbed browsing so far, initially when I first used it in Firefox, I didn’t like it, but it was just because I was used to alt tabbing between windows, etc, but, I’m old and set in my ways. This is a lot better than the grouping that was introduced in earlier versions; I turned that off in about 2 seconds.

Browser Wars

Browser info for Mac users.

On a tech note, I have been playing around with web browsers of late. I was using Safari but, alas, the WYSIWYG text editors on the Content Management Systems that I use did not work with it (Apple: take note!); so, dissatisfied with Firefox's speed (although they are building a Mac OS Cocoa version, codenamed Minefield, which appears to be a little swifter), I then swapped to the Mozilla-based Mac OS 10-only browser Camino.

Soccer fans who use Firefox might want to check out FootieFox.

Why I Don't Like Live.com

Feature creep in live.com?

But beyond the slow factor (which may or may not be a short term thing), there's the ugliness factor. By default it shows a bunch of irrelevant stuff that I don't care about. Sure I can customise it so it shows content I'm interested in - but that takes effort to learn how, and Ma and Pa Bloggs from next door aren't going to go to the effort. Sure it can be customised to what I want - but so can the bookmarks in my browser. It's incredibly simple to set up buttons in Firefox that will bring the local weather up with one click, bring the white pages up with one click, bring google search up with one click - bring my other most used sites up with one click. It's a hell of a lot more simple to do this with the browser than it is with Live.com. Also - why would I want to deal with an overloaded screen each time the browser loads? The answer is - I don't. There's too much noise in my life - I want less. (MS packaging of Ipod anyone?)

Google Complains About IE 7's Search Box

Is this an unfair advantage for IE?

I picked this off the Drudge Report this evening from the New York Times: New Microsoft Browser Raises Google’s Hackles. Give me a break. Google complains about IE 7’s search box in its upper right hand corner. Its just stupid. Google thinks the IE 7 search box puts Microsoft in a unfair advantage for its default being MSN Search (Microsoft’s search engine). Ok so if Microsoft can’t put a search box in the upper right hand corner of their browser, is it fair that Firefox can? I mean Firefox pretty much uses the same concept already and has been for quite some time now. I’m tired of double standards.

That being said, if you find Univ.Bin’s for your favorite proggies, you’ll be golden. I’m using Camino, which everyone should be using anyway (http://www.caminobrowser.org/). Firefox ate system like a pig in a patato patch. Camino= better looking and works great. I also am using Adium for my Instant Messaging, which isn’t as pretty as MSN for mac, but supports display pics and your basic emoticons (in a huge range of IM protocols) and is very fast.

On My Knees

We can deal with using Firefox, but always, always, always check your design in other browsers.

and unfortunately it has nothing to do with sex. No. I am on my knees begging you all to use Firefox. Thanks to sammelsurium (who just translated this post for Blog Against Sexism Day) for pointing out that my new design looked like utter shit in Internet Explorer. I was a bad designer and didn’t think to check to see if it worked in IE. I’ve just spent a few hours working on the bugs and i think i fixed most of them. However, for now you IE users still won’t be able to correctly view some of the graphics (like the ‘blogroll’ and ‘metafied’ images on the right) because they are PNGs. I’d like to switch them to another format so that all you stubborn IE users can get the full transparent experience, but they just don’t look right. Perhaps i’ll figure it all out later, but for now you’re just going to have to get Firefox or deal with it. Sorry.

I have successfully tested this file format with both IE and Firefox. It is provided below as an example for you to utilize, but I make no warranties or claims of fitness-to-purpose. Kick Ass Firefox Extension

Check out the View in IE extension for Firefox if you use IE-centric sites.

I’ve been using the Firefox View in IE Extension for about a year or so now and I love it. Like a lot of companies, Yahoo has a ton of web based applications that I rely on to do my day to day looking up orders, looking at contracts, accessing marketing materials, etc. Unfortunately, a lot of these applications are a bit dated and don’t necessarily play well with Firefox. Therefore, I have become extremly reliant on the View in IE Extension. If I find a page that isn’t working, simply right click and a new IE window opens up. It was great.

Tools For Compliance With Web Standards

Good post on web standards compliance.

Web Developer Extension is an extension for open source Mozilla Firefox and Flock browsers. It provides two categories of utilities - one which will dissect the HTML page that has been visited - analyse each and every component, and a set of tools to test compliance to standards. Because of this combination, it provides critical value in the convenient form of a toolbar.

Ever-Lasting Open Source Projects

Everlasting is a long time.

Take WordPress for example. It is a predecessor of b2, which became dormant in the past. Netscape and its evolution towards Mozilla and Firefox resulted in what is arguably the best Web browser, among many browsers in existence. AbiWord, KOffice, OpenOffice and StarOffice share some common fundamental codebase and they all (if not most) are here to stay. This comes to show the power of looking upon the shoulders of others, constantly extending in this code-driven community.

Haven't had a chance to check out Camino, but can't wait.

Oooh. The alure of an Aqua interface is too much for me. I just downloaded Camino for my Mac. It’s made by the people who make FireFox and uses the same rendering engine except they made it look more like a native Mac app. I’m already loving it. It just looks nicer. To me it’s just FireFox with a nicer looking outside. Plus it has integration with a bunch of Mac apps. If you have a Mac, I highly recommend you check out Camino.

Unsubscribing Just Got Easier

Good idea for a Firefox plugin.

There are a few interesting links. One is the lookup service at http://www.lashback.com/register/UnsubsafeLookup.aspx and another is a downloadable blacklist at http://lashback.com/ubl.htm which is available in different formats. They also have an SDK and a web service but you need to have a client key number to use it which I doubt is something you can get for free. If it was free to use then I think a Firefox plugin would be nice for submitting and checking. Perhaps there is a way to use the free stuff though. Something to look at in the future. Almost forgot, they also have a blog but it doesn't get updated much.

A Switch To K-Meleon

K-Meleon ... yet another browser.

And guess what, it hasn’t crashed or even slowed down. Its very very fast, maybe even faster than Firefox by my rekkoning. The interface isn’t the best but bares strong resemblence to Firefox. Its very lightweight and easy to run, plus since its an uncommonly used browser, its way safer than Firefox; more so than IE. K-Meleon uses the same gecko rendering engine found in Firefox so there won’t be any page incompatibility, viewing or rendering issues here.

PC Maintenance

Frustrating ... and dangerous.

To be fair, it’s not his fault all those ‘wares were on his computer. My sister also uses that computer as well. My sister refuses to switch over to Firefox because she does not like its “look” and that some of her sites won’t work in Firefox. It’s really frustrating knowing that someone is still using IE in this day and age.

Boooo, SiteMeter

Sounds like an RFE for SiteMeter.

I got a bit excited today when I went over to the FatMixx SiteMeter Report page because I noticed in FireFox that the RSS icon was present in the location bar, indicating that there was an RSS feed for that page. I was hoping they did what Measure Map did, with personalized feeds for my site. I was surprised that there wasn’t an announcement on the SiteMeter blogs. So I checked out what RSS feed they were pointing at. Turns out the feed tag in the source points to the RSS feed for the SiteMeter weblog. Booo! The RSS icon is only supposed to show on pages that have RSS feeds for the content on that page. Not just that the site somewhere has an RSS feed about something. Booo again!

I Know I Can Speel

It would be great to get the spellcheckers integrated. Hmmm, anyone want to start a new business?

I would really like to use a spell checker on all my various posting excursions on the Internet. I blog. I Whirlpool. I e-mail. Surely it would be good to have a spell checker, just to make sure I’m hitting the right buttons? I have been using the Google Firefox toolbar for its spell check feature; it’s actually the only feature I use. But it looks like it’s incompatible with Wordpress’ new ajaxified ‘Write Post’ section. Bummer.

The Freeness Of Protopage

For sure:

As of now, Protopage allows you to have frames that contain RSS Feeds (your choice and predefined sets), bookmarks/links, and a panel for sticky notes. I have not found that Protopage allows for user defined plugins or extensions, which limits its ability for expansion. They have just made it so that IE and Firefox users can use the scroll bar on their mouses to scroll down the RSS feeds, this is an example of how Protopage is still in the early stages and has quite a few things that it still needs to work out.

Google Pack

Kind words for Google Pack.

Gripes aside, Google Pack really helped me. I assumed it would be a nice way to save time managing programs on my fiancé’s computer, but seeing as my PC is pretty much bare (it has a few games, Firefox, Tortoise SVN, InstantRails and a text editor installed), I actually found it very useful. I noticed a lot of digg.com readers commenting that Google were becoming ‘bloated’, or doing too much, but it worked nicely for me!

Apple's Safari Mistake: Choosing KHTML Over Firefox

20/20 hindsight.

If you recall, there were significant problems with Firefox (then called Mozilla) development two years ago. An ongoing problem was that there didn’t seem to be a lot of development …. new versions took ages to come out. But the second problem, and probably the one that scared Apple off most of all, was code bloat. Mozilla/Firefox had a LOT of code, was a big download, hogged memory, and was sloowwwww ….

Firefox and del.icio.us

Some tips here for using del.icio.us with Firefox.

If you do decide to test it out there are a few necessities that I recommend. First, find and download the Firefox extension that allows book marking and tagging on the fly (assuming you use Firefox). Otherwise you’ll have to navigate from the site you want to bookmark to del.icio.us’ site to add it and tag it. Also figure out how to back up your critical bookmarks (maybe by tagging them as such). It has an export capability into a browser friendly version and considering the recent complaints about their outage, you might want to have a back up plan.

Sage For RSS

If you're using RSS, you might want to consider Sage and Firefox for your RSS reader.

RSS on the other hand, requires little bandwidth and is one of the biggest changes I have made to my web browsing habits over the past couple of months. Before I started using RSS, I would have to click on a whole bunch of bookmarks to have my daily “update” of news. But since most sites worth reading now have RSS feeds, it makes sense to use an application or plugin to consolidate your information gathering and minimize the effort needed to retrieve that information. There’s many RSS readers out there, but the one I use is a Firefox plugin called Sage. It installs in seconds, integrates with any Live Bookmarks you may already have in your bookmarks, and allows you to take advantage of tabbed browsing and all the other goodies that Firefox has. You can even customize the look of feeds by editing a CSS template!

CSBlogs : Integrated Bookmarklet

Firefox makes bookmarklets like the one described here easy to install.

Here's a post by Marshall Kirkpatrick that describes a bookmarklet he created, complete with demo and link to a screencast on how to use it. In Firefox you can drag the Javascript link to the tab bar and use it with CS or any blogging app. That doesn't work in IE and Maxthon, which I use about 95% of the time (old habits...).

Ask The Browser

Never thought to ask my browser that question.

It seems a decent amount of people I know have made the switch already. Not to worry, if you know someone who has not switched over to Firefox, send them this way. It’s not costing them anything but time, time that they have wasted using other browsers that can’t standup to Firefox. Ask your browser “Browser, would you like to go in to the octagon with Firefox and tap out in five seconds?”. I think you know the answer. In case you don’t, your browser said “No thanks, Firefox looks like a beast. He’s gotta be on the juice”.

Testing On Old Browsers

Great tip for testing a website for backwards browser compatibility.

Got some real work done for a client. I’m really thankful for web standards like HTML 4.01 Strict and CSS. I did some conversion of some client web pages over to HTML 4.01 Strict and CSS. I tested in Mozilla/Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera. Uploaded the finished web pages and notified the client. Then, I thought about doing a google search to see if there was a way to view the client’s web site using older browser standards. Whew! There was http://anybrowser.com and the client’s web pages degraded gracefully to the older web standards. Thanks in most part to HTML 4.01 Strict and CSS and the engineers who had the foresight to allow for graceful degradation. Thanks guys!

Open IE Inside Of Firefox!

This is wizardry!

I know what you’re saying: why would I ever want to touch IE once I have Firefox? Some sites still don’t support open-source browsers, so you’re forced to use IE. When you encounter one of these sites, you need to go find that burried application that you deleted the shortcut to becuase you never thought you’d need it again, and go from there. With this simple Firefox extention, you can now run an instance of IE as a tab inside of Firefox! Very cool!

Mobile Transcoding Sites

Really good info on mobile browsers and Phonifier here.

Phonifier is an open source mobile transcoder. Like loband, I wasn’t able to get it to work with any of several phones and emulators from Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Motorola and Openwave. In all cases I got either a blank screen or a screen with some text but missing the text field for entering the target url and/or the submit button. I think the problem is that Phonifier uses the same html page for both mobile and desktop browsers. There are separate stylesheets for media=’screen’ and media=’handheld’. The handheld stylesheet makes all of the extraneous text invisible. Mobile browser support for media=’handheld’ is still very limited and apparently none of the browsers I’m using support it correctly. This is a pretty inefficient way to make a mobile page as the browser still has to download a lot of content that it ends up throwing away. A better solution would be to have a separate mobile specific homepage with it’s own url. I was able to see how Phonifier is supposed to work by using Firefox and the Web Developer extension to force the use of the handheld stylesheet. I was also able to load the site on the Access Smartphone browser but even here the browser did not use the handheld stylesheet!. Fortunately, only the initial Phonifier page where you enter the url you want to transcode has this problem.

OpenOffice

This is a very good proposal.

My dream recommendation, given any amount of resources being made available, is that OO.o be ported to Gtk. Then, it would be restructured to be the Firefox of office software - a lean core functionality and a flexible “Extensions” mechanism. This would hopefully lower the barrier-to-entry for programmers sufficiently as to encourage wide participation by people interested in improving the office suite. The lean core could then be focused on and maintained more effectively than the massive bulk of the do-it-all office program.

Compromised?

Good story on dealing with computer security.

Let’s rewind back to yesterday afternoon. I got out of class and decided I needed to work on some insurance information and make sure it was all up to date and the like. As I’m following the instructions about registering online, I fire up Opera and proceed to load their web page. I’m greeted by some MSPaint concoction of some whackass smiley face telling me that I’ve been “pwn3d”. My first thought was, “Shit, I hope for my sake I haven’t already registered with this insurance company.” Next course of action is to fire up Skype and call this company to inquire about a possible security breach and if any of my information had been leaked. It was the middle of the afternoon here which meant it was outside of normal business hours. I made a mental note to call them late last night and went about my way surfing the web and whatnot only to find that all of the images on all of the sites I was browsing were replaced with this same graphic. This worried me; was my laptop compromised? Did I load up a trojaned binary by chance? Is Opera being screwy? I quickly launched Firefox and discovered that I couldn’t escape this image. “What the hell is going on?” I thought to myself.

Collaborative Linkblogs

Nice concept here with del.icio.us and Live Bookmarks.

Combining del.icio.us and Live Bookmarks leads to some pretty interesting results. It pretty much amounts to a community link blog where anyone can contribute a cool new link that they found. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve stumbled across a ton of stuff I would have never seen otherwise (see my last two posts). To give it a shot, go to Bookmarks->Manage Bookmarks in Firefox. Click on File->New Live Bookmark and enter “http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/java” into the Feed Location field. Give it a name and hit Ok. Now go to your bookmarks and find your newly created Java linkblog. You can change “java” in the url to any word that comes to mind. I’m currently monitoring popular, java, software, programming, web, linux, tech, internet, webdesign, technology, business, science, ajax, webdev, php, css, funny and firefox. This amounts to a huge waste of time, but it’s pretty interesting.

Always Learning About CSS

It would be great if CSS worked the same everywhere.

I had the ID “content” set to a zero margin and padding, but when I went to preview the results there was about 10 pixels of margin above the DIV. I started to play with negative margins to shrink this gap down, but I was getting different results in both IE and FireFox. After a lot of fiddling around, I finally set the margin on the paragraph tag to zero and suddenly things fell into place. Strange, but I would have expected there to be space between the paragraph and the DIV.

The Sun and The Moon Go Open Source

For our friends in Thailand:

Only in Thailand... The Software Industry Promotions Agency (SIPA) has announced open source software suites for both servers and clients in the Thai market. Suriyan (roughly "the sun") is a Linux server package which allegedly does not require Linux skills. Chantra (roughly "the moon") is a client suite containing Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird, and more.

The Jared Of Togo's

Love the future kid's name.

Anyone who knows me knows that this whole software engineering thing is just filler while I pursue my real goal in life: being the Jared of Togo’s. I’ve been known to eat their sandwiches at every meal—Dinner, After Dinner Snack, and Midnight Feeding for engineers—and it is widely known that my future wife will need to accept our firstborn, Togo von Firefox de la Schmutz. Firefox Plugin Development

There have got to be answers for setting up Firefox develoment environments on the web somewhere.

I’ve tried a few times to play with firefox (or it’s parent, mozilla) in order to write a plugins. There’s no shortage of ideas that I could implement… But every time I get stymied at the first step: getting the development environment set up.

IE Or Not IE

Looking forward to more comparisons between IE7 and Firefox.

Yesterday I decided to try the new Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1, as I am always game to test new software. After installation I have noticed that IE has now got tab browsing support, which was one of the main factors for me using firefox. Looks like I will most likely be running both Firefox and IE7 in the interim and hopefully with time I should see which one I will stick with.

What Is So Fantastic About Firefox?

Maybe someone can help this poor Firefox user:

I was convinced some time ago about quitting my Internet Explorer in favour of Mozilla’s Firefox as my default browser. I have been very pleased with the services and possibilities in Firefox since I started using it. Up until today! I was cruising around on the Internet, not doing anything unusually from what I normally do, and not visiting pages I don’t usually do either. A little later on I needed another browser open, as one sometimes do, so I did what I usually do - clicked on the firefox icon in the bar - and swuuush…all my settings, pass words, my Sage, and preferences were gone! Please tell me what that is all about! That is just not okey at all!

What?! Microsoft not following standards?!

Anonymous Cowherd writes, “Paul Thurrott, a journalist that usually writes about all things windows related (and sometimes about Apple affairs too), made a call in a recent article to boycott Internet Explorer, due to Microsoft’s approach (continued in IE7) of not supporting web standards”:

Blake Ross Interview

Check out this interview with Firefox techy Blake Ross.
Despite this awkward start, Mr. Ross agreed to the interview, and we met a couple weeks ago at a Palo Alto, Calif., coffee house so that I could get to know this tech prodigy and potential serial entrepreneur. Not surprisingly, he seemed bright, grounded, and with a clear vision for his near future. More surprisingly, he seemed not at all caught up in the hype surrounding him.

Due to the fact that well over half of the US population are cell phone users, internet companies are attempting to capitalize on mobile web markets, by developing specialized software and services for cell phone users. I'm using Firefox 1.0.6 and everything is working so far.

Just days after the latest release of Firefox 1.0.5, Mozilla Foundation is going to release Firefox 1.0.6 as early as next week. This is due to the API changes in 1.0.5 unintentionally broke some extensions, which have caused some incompatibility between the browser and web-based applications.

In Praise Of Firefox

Concise post on why you should switch to Firefox.

Finally, my favourite desktop application is the Firefox web browser. If you are still using Internet Explorer, and you use the web anything more than very occasionally, it is well worth updating to this much more modern browsers - it is more productive, more secure and more usable. The only other browser that even comes close it Opera. Firefox’s most amazing feature is its extensibility. I have 12 extensions installed, but the one that needs mentioning here, is the one that helps with website design, the Web Developer Toolbar extension. If you design or run a website, you need this.

A Firefox Blog Is Born

Check out this nascent Firefox blog.

It's official. Work on my Firefox blog is underway. Rather than having a mishmash of tips and all sorts of information with no real design behind it as was true with my first effort, I decided to do what I did in college when I was faced with any major assignment: Make a plan, an outline. That single decision has already begun to bear fruit. I opened my trusty NoteTab Pro, and made a list. Just a list of what I wanted to include in the sidebars, and in what order the items would appear. I put the list away when I had finished that piece. I took it out again later, and decided as long as I now had my sidebar planned, I could just code a few of the links in. Then I listed my favorite extensions.

Do You Use Firefox

Nice story about grandpa.

If you put my grandfather in a room with God and gave him one question, he would not ask for the meaning of life. He would not inquire as to the existence of poverty or the vagaries of human nature. No, he would ask, and I quoth: Do you use Firefox? My grandfather, an avid watcher of our SpreadFirefox counter, claims to have personally converted the 4 million people in his “inner circle,” or what we call “Florida.” God would make 4 million and one.

Meet Trixie

If you are still using IE, Trixie may help.

Trixie is to Internet Explorer as Greasemonkey is to Firefox. It lets you remix the Web via scripts. You may do this to either make it more readable, fix bugs or to even add little features to make the site more usable to you. Trixie by itself does none of this. It is just a plugin for Internet Explorer that enables executing chunks of JavaScript code and thus lets you use the Web the way you want to use it.

Aardvark Extension

More info on the Aardvark extension for Firefox.

Aardvark is a Firefox extension for interactively manipulating the content on a page. It's like a second cousin of GreaseMonkey. Once it's activated you can mouseover all the elements in a page and manipulate each one by making it wider, narrower, removing it, viewing source etc. I couldn't see a way of making these changes persistent between visits but it's a neat little tool for making adjustments to pages for readability or printing. Besides, it's just cool that you can even do this kind of thing. (via Jeff Barr)

Rich Internet Applications with Laszlo

Some helpful information on Laszlo.

Both frameworks are based upon a XML markup language that is rendered into Macromedia Flash (6 for Laszlo, 7 for Flex) that is displayed on the users browsers. As Flash is now a standard component on IE (with XP SP2) and Firefox, penetration should not be that much of an issue. Also, both can be compiled into native Flash (swf files) that can be hosted on a standard Web server, without the necessary application server (that becomes a development/test component), allowing a wider development community to use and host these frameworks at little or no cost. For more complex applications, support is provided for remote data access through RPC, etc, requiring some form of server data source, but this could be as simple as XML file or a traditional LAMP setup. Laszlo therefore can be deployed at no cost onto a typical ISP configuration, not requiring complex J2EE or Servlet containers to be developed.

Detect Spoofed Sites

Good tip on avoiding site spoofs:

One way for a hacker to attacked your computer is by using a spoofed site. Spoofed sites are also used by spammers, spyware creators, and all sorts of people you don’t want taking control of your computer or information. Spoofed sites are made to look like a legimate sites (eBay is a popular one to spoof), but redirect you to another page. Wisdom of the Crowds

Crowds don't always display wisdom, but Wikipedia and Firefox are examples of the possiblity that they can.

As the old techie saying goes, it's not a bug, it's a feature. Wikipedia is a free open-source encyclopedia, which basically means that anyone can log on and add to or edit it. And they do. It has a stunning 1.5 million entries in 76 languages—and counting. Academics are upset by what they see as info anarchy. (An Encyclopaedia Britannica editor once compared Wikipedia to a public toilet seat because you don't know who used it last.) Loyal Wikipedians argue that collaboration improves articles over time, just as free open-source software like...

Why Do I Bother Reading ForeverGeek?

Good debate going on here about Microsoft's IE7 versus Firefox:

Second, these functionalities that you refer to as "bugs", are in fact functionalities. Microsoft, for the first time in their history, is making a serious push to security. So far, they have released anti-spyware software, upgraded the windows firewall, made significant improvements in IE popup blocking, and they are currently in the works to release a virus definitions. Maybe I missed it, but where are the "bugs"? Don't forget, FireFox has had security holes, Linux has had security holes, Mac has had security holes. ...

No IE7 For Windows 2000

Better support for (not-so-)old Microsoft products from the open source community than from Microsoft.

You can get a compiled version of firefox for almost any platform (mac osx/linux/windows). Microsoft should really be using their old Internet Explorer strategy and make sure that IE7 runs on all the aforementioned platforms. That is not going to happen though, we all know about IE’s nasty habit of binding to the Windows Operating system.

Can Microsoft Technology Cut It?

I've worked in Microsoft shops and it's very frustrating to be locked out of all the open source solutions.

I’ve just started a new job and they are heavily based on Microsoft technology. Some in the company may not think so, but install a version of the fantastic web browser Mozilla Firefox and watch all the Internet technologies come crumbling down. Internet technologies that should be standard.

Javascript Differences Between IE And Firefox

Seems that Firefox follows the Javascript spec and IE doesn't.

Then we get on the subject of standardized specification - something that FireFox and IE can't agree on. FireFox is very rigorious with the way it interprets the javascript language. The problem I ran into is the onChange event for a drop down control. The spec states that the onChange event is only suposed to fire once the value of the control is changed and focus has been lost. FireFox does this. The problem is that IE doesn't, and personally the IE model makes more sense to me. The onChange event fires whenever...

Google Banned At Slashdot

I'm sure this will get worked out somehow.

One of the headlines they offer is Slashdot. As a frequent visitor to Slashdot, I went ahead and added that headline to my page. The very next day I started Mandriva up, opened Firefox, and there was my new home page…with a notice from Slashdot saying that my news aggregator had been banned. The statement from Slashdot said that this action had been taken because of the frequency of the pulling of headlines. I suppose Google checks for headlines as often as it checks for new mail in Gmail, once a minute. Some servers won’t put up...

Expertise and Open Source

The brains behind Apple's Safari worked on Firefox.

Whats another example? Well I guess I can mention Safari, since I haven't for a while :). Sure Safari is also a "fork" but let's ignore that for a while. The main developer of Safari, David Hyatt, worked on the Netscape, Camino and Firefox browsers prior to working on Safari (and KHTML). The man obviously knows his stuff, and hence MacOS users get a browser that is compliant with the latest web standards (plus it's open source as well). Whoever hired Hyatt was pretty smart. I'd bet than even if Apple didn't get the head start they did from...

Firefox Versus Galeon

Interesting bit on Galeon.

And Firefox does have one clear advantage over Galeon: it can read RSS feeds. As I mentioned before, I’m reading RSS with Gnus in XEmacs these days. Which is better than not having an RSS reader, but it feels a little silly, because when a new article appears in a feed, I just click on the link to bring it up in Galeon. So why not eliminate the middle-man? Also, I’ve run into one annoying bug, and Gnus doesn’t handle new versions of RSS (Atom), which is occasionally an annoyance now and will, I suspect, be much more of one in the future.

IE: A Rusted-Out Datsun

Funny description of IE and funny problem with Firefox.

For some reason my ISP software made Firefox stop working about four months ago. Tonight, while cleaning/rearranging my desk, I disconnected the phone line from my laptop then plugged it back in post-cleaning. When I started Netscape online software again after doing this simple unplug-plug, Firefox worked again. *shrug* I'm just glad I can finally rejoin the 21st century by using Firefox and stop using IE, the web browser that is the equivalent of a rusted-out Datsun with no wheels.

Internet Explorer 7 Will Feature Basic Tab Browsing

The winners from all the competition between Microsoft and Mozilla? Consumers!

Web Browsers is another field where they entered late, but managed to beat everyone else to become the most used brand around. So much so, that they became complacent and as a result, we have not seen any real development in the browser for years now. If it was not for the pressure from the alternative browsers Mozilla Firefox and Opera, they might not have even considered developing the Internet Explorer 7 for the current generation Operating Systems.

Firefox 1.04

More on Firefox 1.0.4 release:

In case you didn’t catch it: Firefox (incidentally, I just found out that it recently pushed ie’s market share below 90%) has released version 1.04 (download at mozilla.org), which addresses the serious security flaws found in previous versions earlier this week. It’s interesting to me that there was such a huge amount of news surrounding the vulnerability, but you could basically totally miss the fix that came three days later if you weren’t paying attention. Anyway, we can all turn our javascript back on now.

Firefox Installation Not There Yet

Words of warning about upgrading to Firefox 1.0.4.

The installer on Firefox 1.04 still doesn’t run smoothly. If you download and do a fresh installation it does, it runs like a dream, but if you download and just install over the top of a previous release you may have bugs. It’s supposed to be installed into a “clean” folder, which requires that you uninstall (via the control panel) and previous version.

All this destruction and reconstruction is due to a nasty virus I couldn't eliminate. Firefox 1.0.4

Our German correspondent reports that Firefox 1.0.4 is now available ... but only in English so far. Unfortunately, he can't wait for the German version.

Firefox GreaseMonkey For Image Capture

Some problems implementing an image capture on Greasemonkey because of asynchronous actions.

Just tried the firefox greasemonkey — I was trying to use it for enhancing the batch website snapshot-capture script: One problem of the current script is that the mozilla remote control command is asynchronos so it does not know whether the current page has been fully loaded or not before taking the snapshot and moving to the next web site; what it can do is simply to wait for a constant period of time between two web sites. Using a user script that applies to all web sites we can make sure the snapshot-capturing script is notified when every web page is completely loadedbefore it takes the snapshot.

A Firefox Search Plugin For Technorati

Good tool for technorati users:

I made a new Firefox search plugin today, for the blog serach engine Technorati. If you search for keyword(s) on Technorati, you get a list of blogs mentioning those keyword(s); if you search for a URL, you find blogs linking to that URL (e.g., blogs linking to me). I love Technorati almost as much as I love Google News :), so I was very surprised no one had made this plugin yet! [CORRECTION: Some people already had. I was going off of the "official" Firefox plugin directory, which does not list a Technorati search plugin. But I should have known...

Here’s a nice article on some possibilities with Greasemonkey, the super-powerful scripting extension for FireFox. Right now I’m using Greasemonkey to run BoingBoing Butler (removes ads from BoingBoing), Book Burro (finds competitive book prices), and Linkifier (turns URLs in on-screen text into hyperlinks). When Is An Update Not An Update?

This post questions the way Firefox performs updates after some confusing messages from the auto-update feature.

Huh? So, why did FireFox prompt me to auto-update? Is this FireFox's fault, or FlashBlock's fault? Why can't the extension simply be updated?

Come on, guys. I love FireFox, but let's get on the ball. If we're ever going to even compete with Microsoft on this front, the little details need to be worked out and standardized.. this goes along with what I said earlier, about FireFox missing the mark when it comes to extensions and threading.

Speaking of the tracker, I hate our tracker. It’s not compatible with Firefox. I have to use IE to be able to update tasks. And I hate IE! Hmpft. I’m thinking of logging a request to the programmers. Sana they can find a way to make it work in Firefox. Hay.

A Continuum

Some good insights into Firefox users and the rest of the world.

Seth Godin’s put up a thought-provoking post where he posits a new digital divide - instead of the computer-literate vs. the computerless, he sees a divide between the ‘digerati’ and the ‘left-behind’. One group uses Firefox, another uses Internet Explorer. One group has a blog, knows what RSS is, gets news from Google… one doesn’t. Seth goes on to note that the ‘digerati’ are the most-influential of all customers, and they need to be understood by any marketers that have a chance of being...

Mixing Tiger and m0n0wall

Some arcane issues with Mac OS Tiger, Firefox and m0n0wall.

But I've run into an obscure and annoying bug. At work we run m0n0wall, a tiny firewall based on FreeBSD (and which I can heartily recommend). The only access is via a web front-end (mini_httpd with php). I found that accessing the m0n0wall with Firefox under Tiger causes the mini_httpd in m0n0wall to crash. The firewall is still running, you just can't view or change settings. It took me 3 or 4 crashes to associate them with Tiger, but then I was able to reproduce the behavior, and it was confirmed by another member of the mailing list.

Custom Firefox Search Box for Library Catalog

This custom Firefox search box is for the Johns Hopkins University library, but it might give you some ideas for your own custom search box.

So based off of work pointed out here and here, I’ve made a crude search server plugin for the JHU Library catalog. Download jhucatalog.src and save it in your /searchplugins. On my home system (Win2k) it is: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins. Make sure after you save the file that it is saved with the .src extention (not with a .txt or some other extention).

Corante and Firefox

More websites are designing with Firefox in mind, but not all websites:

Corante is an interesting collection of blogs. Unfortunately, it renders so slowly in Firefox that I basically can’t stand reading it. I don’t know if it’s Firefox’s problem (IE seems to do ok), but in the meantime it’d be nice if the Corante folks fixed it (yes, I mailed a comment in)…

Turning fifty

An activist Firefox proponent proposes a little Firefox activism.

How about this- as many people as physically possible decend upon the lawns outside Microsoft HQ, Firefox t-shirts, banners, the whole lot. Attract as much mainstream publicity as possible. Wind up M$ execs so they try to have you all removed from the area. Get it captured on film, get it publicised.

Once everyone knows 50 million others have tasted the Firefox experience, we’ll be heading towards 100 million before we know it.

Wikipedia Home Page

I like the idea of learning something new from Wikipedia every day:

I have the my homepage set to a wikipedia random page so I learn something new every time I start firefox (the url is “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Randompage“). And today I got this wikipedia article amounts to not much more than an advert. It demonstrates some of the flaws of not running it through a gatekeeper I think, but given that I have been using wikipedia for ages and haven’t run into many problems like this, maybe their dispute resolution does work well. But I suspect more and more people working in PR/shills...

64-bit Firefox Builds

The 64-bit version of Windows has some implications for Firefox:

Now that Windows XP x64 has been released, we should decide when we will begin supporting it by providing official 64-bit builds of Firefox/Thunderbird. Plugins will probably be an issue, but since extensions are not compiled, they should have no problems running. Work has started on this front and is being tracked in bug 237202. Third party Windows x64 Firefox builds are already available.

Gopherspace Almost Ready!

I haven't heard of anyone using gopher (a precursor to html) for a while. But this blogger points out some good reasons to consider it. It works with Firefox, but your mileage may vary on other browsers.

As a web designer, you’d think I’d like HTTP. I don’t. Why? Look at it. Spyware, idiot flash intros, ads to get free iPods, retarded animated gifs, the list goes on! I think that everyone should go back to the good ol’ days of BBSing. I guess I’m the only one. Anyway, to show my love for a protocol that pwns, I started a gopherspace. It’s almost finished, so you should check it out and enjoy..

getSelection() Workaround for Safari 1.3 and Firefox 1.0.3

Here's a good workaround for some javascript problems.

Yesterday morning I noticed a change to the JavaScript/DOM getSelection() behavior in the new Safari 1.3 (in 10.3.9) and the most recent version of Firefox 1.0.3.

What Safari and Firefox now seem to be doing is creating a DOM selection object from getSelection() instead of treating it as a simple string. The result is that getSelection() appear to be a string, but few of the string manipulation functions work without additional considerations.

Further inconsistencies between Safari 1.3 and Firefox 1.0.3:

Fails silently in Safari, returns selected text in Firefox. Safari dumps this into the Console log:

I was using the length property to determine whether a selection was empty or not, then fetching the title of the window if that value was 0. Knowing that length no longer works in Firefox and Safari, isCollapsed can be used as a conditional switch.

How Opera Competes with Firefox

Is Opera pushing for more marketshare?

To be clear, Opera's download is *tiny*, well under 4MB, about half that of Firefox. But really, now that dial-up is for chumps, I don't know how much of an advantage it can remain. I haven't done the math, but I'd think in terms of filled UI space at default install - that is where Opera's impression of bloat mostly comes from. The word Opera must learn to hate is clutter.

I think Opera is starting to think huge. They want the huge market of people who don't want much from their browser. As long as it has a back button - they're set. For these people, Speed, Security, Simplicity is a great reason to move over in reaction to bad press/bad spyware (deserved or not) for IE, or even Firefox.

Putmarks Firefox Extension

Here's a firefox extension that will help you sync up bookmarks you might want to keep in several places. Very good idea for users of multiple devices.

putmarks is a lightweight solution for use with an XBEL bookmark synchronizing package such as the wonderful "Bookmarks Synchronizer" Firefox extension by Torisugari; both pieces of software I use for synchronizing my bookmarks between home and school everyday.

putmarks functions as the remote end for a book marks synchronizer in that it accepts HTTP GET and PUT requests, reads and writes an xbel.xml file, and also keeps a log of all transations. It is very light-weight and requires nothing more than a PHP-enabled web-server to operate.

We were thinking the exact thing a second ago:

I've just looked at the download count for my Firefox theme (https://addons.update.mozilla.org/themes/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&category=Modern&numpg=10&id=370), and it has had over 1.2 million downloads.

WebSideStory's New Numbers

Whence Firefox?

Now that over 25 million copies of Firefox went over the pipes between the release of 1.0 and 1.0.1, and the slowdown has occured, the real test is going to be whether steady growth can continue after initial hype drove the biggest open-source/Free Software advocacy campaign in history. Let’s hope so — web standards are not a fad, web security is not a fad, and Firefox is more than an alternative (like its less successful predecessors such as the still ultra-fast Opera): it’s a killer browser with good security, impeccable standards...

Cool Firefox Ad

The condom ad is controversial. In the vein of "bad P.R. is good P.R.", it might be a winner, but it has some serious brand implications.

Thunderbird Webmail Extension

Turns out this user's problems with a Thunderbird email extension were bandwidth related.

I have a Yahoo! account so I tried it out. I created a webmail account through the ‘New Account’ wizard and then Web Mail began downloading my messages. It stopped downloading after a while though with an error message saying it got ‘negative vibes’. I tried to log in from Firefox and was greeted with the following error message:

Unable to process request at this time — error 999

Declan (a workmate), googled the error message and referred me to this page that details the possible reasons for a 999. If the problem really is bandwidth related, then this extension is not much use if your Yahoo! account get lots of mail.

Bypassing Ads in 'Freeware' Version of Opera

Opera 8.0 is now available. Here's a comparison of Opera and Firefox bypassing adverts:

I wanted to evaluate Opera as compared to Firefox without seeing advertisements. If it turns out that the software suits my fancy, I’ll buy it. I won’t — and you certainly shouldn’t — use the following procedure to bypass advertising in the free version for any longer than is necessary for an evaluation. Firefox's Best Feature: Simplicity

Lots of reasons why Firefox is a simple solution:

Erin Joyce thinks Opera 8 is going to be a huge hit, but she fails to understand why Firefox has been so successful in the first place:

“Tabbed browsing? If you’re a Firefox fan – and their legions are growing because of this feature alone – you’ll find it even more appealing in Opera. After all, this crew helped promote the idea of tabbed browsing. The latest version offers tiles, cascades and panels, to name a few ways of keeping track of all the pages you’re running at once.”

My mom doesn’t want tiling. Or cascading. Or panels. She just wants a simple way to keep multiple sites open, and it’s because Firefox provides only that—without all the confusing bells and whistles—that she finds it so appealing.

AdBlock and FlashBlock for Firefox

I have the same problem on my Mac. Thanks for the tip!

Earlier this week, I was complaining via IM to MXV about Firefox repeatedly crashed on me after trying to load several pages of content from one particular website that's loaded with ad banners, both animated gif and Flash.

And because of the number of Flash banners on that website (especially the interactive ones), it maxes out my Mac's dual processors and crashes Firefox as a result. And even without those Flash banners, there's still a ridiculous number of ad bloat... scripts, cookies, and animated gif banners... that I have to sit through to get to the content that I want to read.

MXV mentioned AdBlock, and after installing and configuring it, I can't believe it took this long for me to use it! Coupled with FlashBlock, the load times for websites should be much less than before, plus Firefox won't crash on me anymore!

Firefox site visitors are 71% male

Boys, feel free to bring your girlfriends along to the Firefox site:

Nielsen//NetRatings reported that escalating interest in the FireFox browser garnered a 237% spike in unique visitors to the Web site from nine months ago when the site first met Nielsen//NetRatings’ minimum reporting levels in June 2004. More than 2.6 mln people visited the FireFox site during March 2005 to download the browser and obtain more information.

Males, often the early adopters of technology and gadgets, dominated FireFox’s site composition during the month of March 2005. Men accounted for 71% or nearly 1.9 mln site visitors, compared to the women who comprised of 29% or the minority population who visited in March 2005.

Traffic to Mozilla.org, the site for the Mozilla Foundation credited with developing the FireFox browser, saw a 284% year-over-year growth to 4.1 mln unique visitors. When the latest version of FireFox launched in November 2004, Mozilla.org drew its second largest audience with 3.4 mln unique visitors.

Googlebar Lite

Another nice Firefox extension:

Someone has created a lightweight counterpart to the feature-rich Googlebar extension for Firefox and the Mozilla suite. Googlebar Lite strips out many of the rarely-used features of Googlebar in favor of a lean-and-mean approach to search.

I haven’t had a chance to try this yet, but I’m looking forward to giving it a shot. The full-fledged Googlebar seems to be a cause of frequent slow-downs and Firefox crashes on my home computer, though it runs just fine on my work PC (an Athlon-only problem?).

Firefox Extension Deletes Local Shared Objects

Great first effort by this budding Firefox extension writer:

I’ve been quiet since I wrote about Local Shared Object abuse on Tuesday, but that’s because I’ve been busy. Then, I said “while these new Flash cookies aren’t as easily eraseable as the ordinary variety yet, I’m sure someone will get right on it.” Well, I got right on it. I’m pleased to announce my first Firefox extension ever, Objection,...

Objection’s currently in a pretty rudimentary state - it only works for Windows, and it’s only translated into English - but I plan on building it out over time to have all the functionality and control Firefox users are used to having over plain old cookies. This will serve as a stop-gap solution until Macromedia and the Mozilla Foundation get together to release a permanent one, a solution that prevents Local Shared Objects from being used by unscrupulous (and ultimately counterproductive) marketers to subvert the wishes of everyday...

I’m hoping the people who first discussed Local Shared Objects and their threat to user privacy...

Pro: Uses Firefox’s Preferences UI.

Am I seeing the balance between this Firefox extension and the existing controls in the Macromedia Flash Player correctly here? or…?

What Makes Me Happy

Okay, an unabashed Mozilla plug:

And now it’s time for a commercial interruption. This blog has been sponsored by… Mozilla. Not seriously, but I do want to brag about them for a minute. I’ve never been a big fan the Explorer web browser. Besides the often serious security issues it just isn’t very flashy or creative. I love Safari on my Mac at work and when I was told that Mozilla had a web browser that was similar to Safari I thought I’d check it out. I downloaded Firefox and gave it a try. I only had to use it for a few minutes and I was hooked. Tabbed browsing is “da bomb” and I love the optional themes to make it look different every day if I want to.

Having loved Firefox, I decided to give their other products a try. I’m now using Thunderbird exclusively for all my email on my laptop as well as Sunbird to keep myself organized. So far, there are no problems that I can see and I’ve been using them for a bit now. So if you are looking for a great email program, try Thunderbird. If you need a very cool (colorful and full of features) calendar give Sunbird a try. And if you aren’t using Firefox you don’t know what you’re missing! And did I mention - they are all free!...

Love the enthusiasm!

Make Sure Your RSS Feed Supports Firefox and Thunderbird

We do check for this here at Firefox:

Feedburner estimates, as of early January 2005, that Firefox and Thunderbird combined account for just under ten percent of all RSS feed readers which read the 800 most highly subscribed feeds that Feedburner manages. That’s a lot, and it’s growing.

Check to make sure that your feed is recognizable by both Firefox’ Live Bookmarks and Thunderbird. When you view your website with Firefox, there should be an orange cube with what looks like radiating radio waves in the lower right-hand corner of the browser bar at the bottom of the screen. Put your cursor on the orange cube to make sure that it then indicates the feeds which are available from your site. To verify that Thunderbird will work with your feed, enter your feed’s URL as I described a couple of days ago in the

Read my Mozilla vs Microsoft article if you skipped over it last month. When Microsoft finally integrates feed reading capability into its browser, it’ll have to be able to read (as-is) the same feeds that Firefox and all the other feed readers can read, at least for awhile.

A New Bug in Firefox

Look for a Firefox release shortly to cover this.

Secunia, a security research firm, found a bug in the Firefox Web Browser which could be used by malicious people in obtaining personal and sensitive information.

Secunia released an online test that permits Firefox and Mozilla users to determine if they are affected by the bug. The test showed that users are indeed affected and the way to prevent this is to disable JavaScript support. The result came six weeks after the Mozilla Foundation released a security update to the Firefox Browser, which includes several fixes that guard against spoofing and arbitrary code execution.

Web vulnerabilities are not a new thing in the system, there will always be flaws because flaws exist, said Joe Wilcox, an analyst from Jupiter Research. He also added that the focus was on how they will handle the problem and find a solution. This is the part wherein Microsoft has the advantage over Firefox: the former has a team working to eliminate vulnerabilities, while the latter has limited resources.

Ad Blocking

ad blocker Here are some more firefox tips for ad blocking. They not only get rid of a lot of the visual noise, but they make surfing a lot faster (especially on a slow connection).

One of my biggest pet peeves is having to view ads when I’m surfing. They are garish and can be quite disruptive. I’ve discovered ways to block on-page ads in the two browsers I find myself using the most, Safari and Firefox (If you haven’t found a way to block pop-ups yet, you’re not even trying).

For you windows users out there, there’s a handy-dandy Firefox plugin called Adblock that will get the job done. It can be downloaded and installed here. Once installed, you can right-click on ads that you see and click either ‘Adblock Image’ or ‘Adblock iFrame’. This will prevent the image or frame from being displayed. If you’re really savvy you can use wildcards (*’s)...

Using the News Aggregator built into Firefox

There are lots of news aggregator tools on the market, both free and not free. Lots of people (including yours truly) just use the one built in to Firefox.

You can also get RSS feeds without an aggregator if you use Firefox as your internet browser. Firefox is a free browser application that has both Windows and Macintosh versions. It is a much superior browser compared to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for many reasons including security. It’s also a nice addition to Safari for Mac users and is very handy on those rare occasions when Safari doesn’t handle a site correctly.

Firefox calls its RSS aggregating feature Live Bookmarks and an excellent explanation of how to create them is available here.

Using Firefox, here’s how you’d add a live bookmark to get the Seattle Times’ political news.

So, what’s better - setting up feeds in Firefox or using a news aggregator? The benefits of the Firefox solution include the RSS links being right in front of you. The benefits of using an aggregator may include a more attractive interface - especially if you use NewsFire - and the ability to read quickly read a summary of the article.

Who knew...

You may have noticed that the browser will make one request to a web page at a time, as do most web browsers currently on the internet. This is due to Firefox’s configuration for the pipelines, which you can take advantage of that by making some simple modifications to its configuration file.

Yahoo Updates Firefox Toolbar

New version of the Yahoo toolbar available tonight.
Yahoo on Tuesday night plans to unveil an updated toolbar for the Mozilla Foundation's open-source Firefox browser that offers the company's Anti-Spy adware and spyware removal software for computers running Microsoft's Windows operating system. Yahoo, which recently backtracked on a pledge to make all its software compatible with Firefox, also will make its basic Firefox toolbar, without Anti-Spy, available for use with Linux and Apple Computer's Macintosh operating systems. The toolbars and Anti-Spy software are free.

More Controversy on Firefox Prefetch

cookies

I noticed some additional information about concerns regarding firefox prefetch. It happens that Google recently enabled prefetch on the first links of their search results pages, and this, in combination with the default settings of Firefox (actually all recent Mozilla browsers, I believe), is causing additional cookies to be set. The original quote is from Google & Firefox == Evil & Annoying.

I recently did a search at google for "radio shack". To my surprise, I received a cookie setting request from radio shack.com. This had never happened before- and radio shack also happened to be a sponsored link. I did other searches, such as "ford", "sony", and even "girl scouts"- and each time, the top link requested a cookie to be set. Since Girl Scouts did not have a sponsored link- I realised it must only be the top link that sets a cookie. It turned out that Mozilla browsers (that includes firefox) and Google have both enabled prefetch- although it would seem that Google only recently enabled it- as this is a new occurrence.
I myself have Firefox delete all cookies when I exit firefox, and that seems to work best. Sites that require cookies for session control work, but nothing is remembered between sessions. It's not perfect, but it's a decent compromise.

IE Sucks!

How do you think this blogger really feels? Notes on problems with IE and Flash.

Internet Explorer really does suck. Everything always works the way you want it to in Firefox, but IE likes to add frustration to your life. (Ask anybody I work with.) The latest example is that anything using Flash on my site scrolls on-top of my header and footer. So my picture viewer and an object from a previous post show up on top of everything when you scroll this page. Well guess what… I’m not going to waste my time figuring out why. Enjoy the new stuff. I have some picture up for you enjoyment.

Annotating the Web

Here is info on a cool extension to annotate web pages. If you use it, give the folks here at Firefox a nice review, please!

If you like trying out new toys and have an interest in the annotated web, webbed footnotes wants you. Part of an MSc project at MIT, webbed footnotes is a firefox plugin that allows users to post annotations to web pages, as well as read and rate the annotations of others. It's very news-focused, at least at the moment - testers are only able to try it out with NY Times stories. There are, of course, similar projects floating around. One of my favourites is stumbleupon,...

RSS Extension for Firefox

This blogger tells about RSS and a Firefox extension used for reading RSS.

I have tried not to put anything tech related on this site since this site is not about tech, but I am a bit of a tech junkie so I think I may add a few tech bits. I have decided that since RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feeds have changed the way I use the internet that I would just give a quick rundown about them. With an RSS reader on your computer you can be notified automatically of site updates. I use Firefox as my web browser (like most people should unless you like pop ups and spyware) instead of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer so I use a plugin for Firefox called Sage as my feed reader. What this does is add a side window to my browser, that I can turn on and off, and lists all the site’s feeds that I have subscribed to. It also shows which feeds have been updated almost like an email program lets you see what email has been read and what is unread. There are many different types of RSS readers available depending on your operating system or needs, just do a search on google for “RSS readers". Of course this will only work if your favourite sites have RSS feeds. I have two RSS feeds, one is for my main blog page (the blog is what you are reading now) here, and one for the gallery here. These links are to be read by RSS readers so clicking on them will just display the code. In order to subscribe to these feeds copy and paste the links into your feed reader. I had more on this (maybe I will add it later if there is interest) but this is already pretty long. If there are any questions email me or post a comment.

Google Preview Extension for Firefox

This could speed up searching a lot.

:: I’ve been experimenting with using a thumbnail preview extension for Google hits when searching in Firefox or browsing through my del.icio.us bookmarks. I’m quite surprised by how often it actually does help me scan a hit list faster than a list sans images, especially when I’m searching for something I’ve seen or visited before.

Firebox Flaw Fixed in 1.0.2

A flaw in Firefox could allow an exploit that uses a buffer overflow condition. Please upgrade to Firefox 1.0.2 soon!
The Mozilla Foundation on Wednesday shipped a new version of its flagship Firefox Web browser to patch a serious security hole that could put users at risk of computer takeover. The flaw, which was discovered and reported by Internet Security Systems Inc., causes a buffer overflow because of the way GIF files are processed by Firefox. Developed by CompuServe in the 1980s, the GIF format is widely used on the Web because of the improved file-compression features it offers. “There have been no known exploits of the bug, but as Mozilla is committed to delivering the most secure product possible, we decided to quickly issue an update to patch the bug,” said Chris Hoffman, director of engineering at Mozilla.

Support For ActiveX in Firefox

ActiveX support in Firefox is available (click on link). This may make it possible if you're using ActiveX but don't want to use IE.
For those looking for an alternative to the MS web browser control to use inside windows applications there is hope in the form of an embedded control that is using the mozilla brower engine. Check it out, it actually implements exactly the same interfaces as the MS web browser control and thus u can literally just replace the activex control in ur apps with the mozilla one without changing any other source code.

Slashdot Interview with Mitchell Baker

Slashdot interview with Mozilla Chief Lizard Wrangler Mitchell Baker. Here's an excerpt.

Roblimo: Well, I don't disagree with you. I use it myself. That leads us into the question: What will be the testbed -- that comes from a reader who calls himself Ars-Farsica (laughter) -- his question is, or her question, we don't know, "Now that the Moz suite is apparently non-official, how will new code be tested? Will there be some sort of 'beta' Firefox release for testing? Or a new very minimal piece of code that is a testbed yet not useful to consumers?"

Mitchell: Oh, that's a good question. Let me give a little bit of background first because sometimes those of us who are deep in the project tend to use... just assume contacts that not everyone has. So the name Mozilla, or Mozilla 1.8 or 1.7 or 1.0, 1.4 has always had many different meanings and that's been confusing. So sometimes it just meant the Mozilla code base, sometimes it meant the application suite, sometimes it meant the platform underneath, and we have... we've been working in the last year or so to try and clear up that confusion and we still have... we've made some progress and we have some work to do. So when we have said Mozilla 1.0 or Mozilla 1.4, 1.7, that actually applies to two different things. One is the application layer, you know, the set of user... the things that the user sees and the user interface and the kinds of interactions that the user can have with the program.

Will Firefox Thrive as Mozilla Wilts?

This reviewer thinks Firefox is the best standalone browser, but likes the Mozilla suite better.

There are many reasons why I think Mozilla can be a better choice than Firefox for some users. Chief among them: Mozilla is much easier to configure, and a single integrated suite of applications is simpler to deploy and manage in a business setting than multiple stand-alone apps.

But it turns out that this argument is moot: The Mozilla Suite as we know it today won't be competing with Firefox for much longer because the Mozilla Foundation has decided to end development of the suite with the current 1.7 version.

BitTorrent Plug-in For Firefox Proposed

Haven't actually seen a BitTorrent plug-in for Firefox yet. This blogger thinks it's a good idea. If you have info, please leave a comment or trackback.

I have been mulling over this idea for quite come time, now and I have decided that I will publish it here and solicit feedback because I don’t think that I have the programming skills to exploit it in short order, which I assume that other people are.

“The Idea” is to integrate bittorrent and firefox somehow - optimally with a plugin, but with a patch if necessary, so that one could imbed bittorrent trackers in webpages and have stuff like images, or random files seemlessly hosted by peer-to-peer. I think that this is an excelent idea to cut down on the bandwidth necessary to host large, high-volume sights, and would immediately propel firefox (or any other browser that implemented it) into a majority marketshare position.

I have been thinking over how to construct a totally peer-to-peer hosted website using bittorrent, but as of now, the solution escapes me. The problem is that websites are inherently dynamic, where as peer-to-peer is inherently static. Once the first suggestion is implemented, I am sure that the solution will begin to emerge with more clarity. In any case, this is probably a “good enough” fix, for those simply worried about bandwith and avalibility issues.

Firefox Extensions Reviewed

Firefox allows extensions that extend its functionality as well as its look. This article reviews some of the best extensions available.

As with all things, Firefox could be improved. Firefox, by default, is designed to be a lightweight browser. That means that it doesn't ship with tons of extras. If you want additional features, you'll need to go out and get them yourself. Fortunately, it's easy to upgrade Firefox by installing "extensions."

An extension is simply an add-on that extends Firefox's functionality. You can get lots of different extensions on the Firefox extensions site. Since there are nearly two hundred different extensions currently available, it can take some time to sift through them all on the Firefox site.

What's the Definition of "Google"?

Maybe you've already noticed this subtle difference in words when you use Firefox with Google.
Google has changed its definitions link from dictionary.com to answers.com. A google search for juxtaposition shows the effect. What is interesting is that answers.com pulls information from wikipedia.org, which was provided bandwidth by google.com [and now Google is providing a service that will be used worldwide to pull information off Wikipedia]. Aside from having both a dictionary.com and a wikipedia.org search box in FireFox (as well as Google) the definition link on Google is still useful and I regularly check it for obscure uses or exact definitions of words. Now it uses answers.com we do not get all the different forms of the word, but we do get any medical or wikipedic information. Interestingly, answers.com does not use Google AdSense, but commission junction that looks like it. There is no announcement yet from Google of their change.

Automatic Firefox Updates

The status of automatic Firefox upgrades is given in the blog article. Click through for most recent status. You can download Firefox 1.0.1 anytime from the Mozilla site.

We're in the early stages of pushing out the automatic updates for Firefox 1.0 users. We're doing a staggered rollout and the first two updates we've pushed are ca-AD and es-AR.

If you're using Firefox 1.0 in either of these locales and can tell me how your update went, please do so in the comments here.

I'll be updating this post as we bring new updates online. Stay tuned.

OK, we've pushed ru-RU. Feedback welcome.

And now it-IT is live.

OK, here's en-US.

Get your hu-HU while it's hot!

And now de-DE.

Oh, just a reminder, this is Windows only. If you're a Mac user or a Linux user, just head to the website and download there.

Ugh, seems like we were serving bits up to Mac and Linux users, which didn't work well considering they were Windows bits. We've temporarily pulled the update on all platforms and locales while we investigate.

update: The full installers per platform work great, it's just the automatic update that we're working on. To get the 1.0.1 update, head over to www.mozilla.org and download from there.

Does Google Pay Firefox?

firefox google logo It turns out that the Google link so prominently displayed in Firefox generates lots of cash to develop more, better Firefox.

Gervase Markham, a Mozilla staff member, said on Sunday that over the past year the Foundation has hired around 10 people, which would not have been possible without the money that Firefox makes by linking to Google.

"The Google deal has provided a significant stream of income for the Foundation," said Markham, speaking at the FOSSDEM conference in Brussels. "Without that deal the Foundation would not have been in a position to have hired some of the people that it has."

Firefox 1.0.1 Released

New version available. For more information, click on the link. Downloads at the Mozilla website.

The Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving choice and promoting innovation on the Internet, today released an update to its award-winning Firefox 1.0 browser. The Firefox security update is available for the 27 million users who have already downloaded the free browser. The Mozilla Foundation encourages all users to download the update, which is available now on all platforms at www.mozilla.org.

"Regular security updates are essential for maintaining a safe browsing experience for our users," said Chris Hofmann, director of engineering for the Mozilla Foundation. "The Mozilla Foundation has developed a community of users and developers who continuously provide feedback on Mozilla software, and as a result of that constant vigilance, we are able to provide quick and effective responses to security vulnerabilities."

The Mozilla Foundation evaluates security issues on an ongoing basis and will issue security updates as warranted. The security update for Firefox includes several fixes to guard against spoofing and arbitrary code execution. Ask Jeeves Meets with Mozilla

firefox askjeeves logo

Tuoc Luong, EVP Technology at Ask Jeeves, recently met with the Mozilla folks to discuss collaboration and open source search technology. Here's his blog entry about the meeting.

We went on to discuss three subjects: 1) AJ Desktop Search 2) AJ Leveraging Firefox Browser 3) XUL platform.

We discussed Ask Jeeves desktop search and the notion of open-sourcing it. We're open at two levels. Contributing just the core desktop indexing technology or possibly the entire desktop search application. They discussed how/what they would evaluate before accepting a major piece of code/product contribution: code size, internationalization, etc. Whether or not we partner with Mozilla on this effort, Chris and team thought it was a good idea for us to pursue overall.

We shared AJ view and support for open source standard, especially on the desktop, and their efforts on Firefox and Thunderbird, both of which I'm impressed with. I shared that Mozilla browser didn't do it for me but Firefox certainly converted many of AJ engineering (including myself) over exclusively to Firefox. We explained that we want to support and leverage Firefox by building extensions to and plug-ins within Firefox. We discussed the fact that it doesn't make sense for us to build a browser from scratch, but we think building Ask specific functionalities on top of Firefox to build an AJ-branded or co-branded browser could make sense in 2005.

Mozilla guys then talked abou XUL and how Firefox and Thunderbird were built using XUL. I was very impressed with the UI capabilities. I mentioned that we have a piece of technology called Octopus that may be very good to integrate into XUL platform. Rafael remembered Octopus because Mark Andreessen was an investor and on Octopus's board. It's ideal as a layer on top of the browser. I thought this could be an interesting extension or integrated into XUL. I said I would demo Octopus to them at some point.

Prototype USM for Firefox

Firefox Displays Blog

This would be really great for Firefox and RSS/Atom feeds from blogs and such.

Mike Rowehl: Randy seems to have some momentum going for his Universal Subscription Mechanism proposal. The basic idea is that we deal with some content types specific to RSS and Atom so that the browser can shove the handling off to an external app that then push the subscribe URL into something that knows what to do with it. Not a bad idea, but I like my idea for a subscription service better. However, if people think that the proposal Randy made is the way to go I don’t want to be a bad sport. I just want things to be simple and work by default. So I hacked together a Python USM handler that works for me under Linux using Firefox.

Randy: Thanks Mike, this is awesome!
