Bittorrent Download Of Mindquarry 1.1
This leads to to the question wether there are any tools available that can automatically create torrents for files in a download repository and that are able to create an initial seed. This would be a nice addition to our Maven Repository Browser.

Azureus Bit Torrent Client For Mac
Ubuntu 7.04 was released and I decided to download it so I could install it under Parallels over the weekend. I didn’t have a BitTorrent client on this Mac, not needing one since I got the Mac at the beginning of the year. While I could download the ISO I figured the Ubuntu servers might still be busy so it was a good time to find a BitTorrent client.

Otimize O Windows Vista Para Torrent, P2P E P2PTV

Sure, its still kind of just looking through crap loads of memory calls to find an AACS processing key, but it works on every current title. I cant say I’m loving the idea of downloading 20gb rips via bittorrent, but the h264 encodes of said movies should be marvellous.

Japanese Cuteness
Cuteness permeates every episode. I guess such unpretentious and sincere cuteness is why I genuinely like Someday’s Dreamers. The entire premise of the series is cute, the protagonist is painfully cute, and the whole series is saturated in cuteness. Don’t take my word for it. Download some episodes via BitTorrent and see for yourself. =)

5 Months Of Prison
In other news, four out of eight administrators of the Finnish BitTorrent tracker ‘Finreactor’ have been declared guilty in court and have to pay damages totaling 60,000 dollars each. The lawsuit against Finreactor has just come to a close. This is believed to be only the first of many filed against the site. Three of the four administrators found guilty are under the age of 18. It is unclear how they are going to scrape together enough money to pay their fines. With a little help from Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation (Keskusrikospoliisi), the Finnish equivalent of the RIAA shut down Finreactor in late 2004.

Web 2.0 Programming
Akamai provided global Internet caching meaning a client browser requesting a specific file when is then sent to another website which gives you the index page of the source site of the file. From the source code you can parse it into your site as an image, video or audio file. The disadvantage here was the hoops one had to go through in order to get a file, plus the fact that they could only use the servers provided to them. Now take BitTorrent, every client is also a server, hence the more popular a file is the faster it can be downloaded because more clients or servers in this case that host the give file. Again the lesson here is to give the power to the people.

Idea For Amazon's EC2 Service
Well, i have an idea on how to use Amazons EC2 Service, but not sure how well it will work. the idea is fairly simple. Podcasting/Video Casting distribution network using BitTorrent. Since S3 already supports BitTorrent support, you upload the file to your S3 account. once there, you post the link to the torrent file in a RSS Feed, which is being monitored by your EC2 servers. they then download and start seeding your file, and keep seeding the file till you tell them to stop.

End Of Television
If TV has been so engrained in our culture, what does the BitTorrent revolution (around 2004) means? What can we infer when corporations decide to take action by targeting TV Download Sites (mid 2005)? They were obviously nervous about how much attention was being taken from them. It took a gutsy move by Apple (Oct 2005) to admit that there was no going back to the television set and that content producers had to find ways of leveraging the Internet as the new distribution channel.

Review: Opera 9
you’re up to date on what they’re all about, they’re just small little programs that can do all sorts of different things, from searching the internet, to providing a clock for your computer, or doing all sorts of other things. The support that they’re getting for the widgets is pretty awesome, too…they’ve got a BitTorrent widget, a Google Toolbar Widget, and my favorite, a feed reader called “Raggerator.” The widgets feature of Opera 9 appears to me like it could shape the future of web browsing. The concept of having all sorts of different programs to enhance your browsing experience is something that sounds really cool to me.

Apple did something most extraordinary, when Mac OS X was released - they simply put to rest a whole OS and started to build upon solid ground - UNIX-based to be exact. Windows on Vista and all the features such as P2P support (which by the way, this is used EVERYDAY on MSN and other IM clients) and Bittorrent had something going on - something that OS X and other Operating Systems will most eventually adopt - but in the long run.

Windows XP Must-Haves
When thinking about BitTorrent clients for Windows, several come to mind: Azureus, uTorrent, BitComet and BitLord. Azureus has all the features and extensive plugin support but is slowed down considerably by its use of the Java VM. uTorrent is quite the opposite with a lightweight application that doesn’t hog system resources. You can find out more about other BitTorrent clients with this detailed comparison chart on Wikipedia.

Building A (Cheap) HDTV PVR
Read the whole thing. My girlfriend and I watch very few shows that dont air on the regular over the air (OTA) broadcasts. Luckily, we are pretty central in houston and have pretty good HDTV reception for all the major networks. So, why do we pay > $50 a month to Time Warner Cable for our TV? Ah, thats right - the DVR - our Scientific Atlanta 8300HD. The functionality of being able to record our shows and watch them whenever keeps us hooked. So, why not build my own PVR! If I try and keep the cost down, it will pay for itself in the money we save not paying Time Warner Cable.

Get a taste of Linux with out hosing up yer Windows install. So if that’s not cool enough, newer PC motherboards can but from USB devices. So now you put the CD image on yer USB thumbdrive and set yer PC to boot from USB and it’s a whole new OS. This is indeed the ultimate rescue/hacker boot medium. I need to get a new bigger thumbdrive, like a 1gig, so I can put one of these on and have a little room left over. Cool Stuff. Go to my geek stuff page for links to some Live Linux CD’s. Ask me nice and I could make ya one. Here’s a link to the BitTorrent page for the actual USB files, mininova

BitTorrent Clients
For several years now, I have only tried a single bittorent client ever - BitTornado. I have heard of a lot other clients available out there, most of them seem to be more popular than the one I am currently using — there’s azureus, uTorrent, BitComet, Turbo Torrent, Bit Lord, Shareaza, etc.

Hard Cash
In terms of media, the internet has already made much headway into this domain. This is why the distribution networks are fast to work as hard as they could to fight the media distribution over the internet. If a person could make his own T.V. show, using his own technologies, and distribute it over the internet, via bittorrent, or his own server, and have it ad supported, all free, what is the appeal of regular distribution networks? Newspapers can already tell you the massive emigration from using them for classified ads since Craiglist started getting headway.

Stupidity, Stupidity, Stupidity
The same level of intelligence was on display on Richard Dawkin's anti-faith program, "The Root of All Evil?", in which Dawkins attempts (and pretty much fails) to heep his temper while fundamentalist creeps claim that the scientists they know think the world isn't 4.5 billion years old, and that Dawkins' grandchildren might laugh at him for ever thinking so. Dawkins compares the guys sermons to the Nuremberg rallies, which I think only doens't cause a larger reaction because I'm not sure he knows what the Nuremberg rallies are. Shall I tell him, or do you want to? Get it off BitTorrent if you haven't seen it.

Dawkins Strikes Again
Which brings me on to another program I watched after comparisons were made between it and the Dawkins program. Called A Brief History of Disbelief, it was a far more thorough treatment of atheism than Dawkins was attempting (all three episodes are available via Bittorrent) and made mention of this puzzle from the Greek philosopher Epicurus:

How Television Could Work
PVRs and MP3 players are already the rage. We don’t watch 80 channels of 24-hour broadcasting every day (and not only because it’s impossible). Most people have a few shows they like, and they surf channels to see them. We aren’t loyal to the networks. We don’t care if we’re seeing our favorite stuff on HBO, CNN, Fox, NBC, or TNT. We’re all about shows, not networks. So in a PVR world, it’s much easier to work bandwidth-wise. You don’t have to send 80 channels of gunk 24 hours per day to every household. You can let them bittorrent the stuff that they actually want. You can track it better, you can charge for it, consumers can pay for a subscription (we already do) and networks can pay back the hot content producers.

Switching To CentOS 4.2
I decided to go with CentOS 4.2, as CentOS is what I have installed on various servers that I admin. I backed up all the important data off the Windows box, and then started the adventure. First, download the DVD image from a torrent, which necessitates a BitTorrent client. Install the client, start the download, work on something else while it takes 6 hours to download. Burn the DVD, drop it into the PC, and reboot.

Pod What?
Now comes the question of distribution. Where can I get podcasts? One would initially go to a website that categorizes podcasts based on their content. The websites list a brief synopsis about the podcast, a link to its main website and link to its feed. The two ways of obtaining the actual audio file are manual and automatic. The manual way consists of going to the podcasts website and downloading the episodes you want to listen to. Not every website hosts the actual audio files on their servers. This is because having many people download audio from your website takes up bandwidth, which costs money. Some websites may just offer links to their bittorrent files (the concept of bittorrent will not be explained here). Automatic distribution pertains to “feeds”. Feeds (usually RSS) are links to a website that monitor it for updated content. Once new material is uploaded the feed can see it. A podcast client is used to check those feeds periodically for new material. The client can be scheduled automatically every X amount of days. The feed can download either the actual audio file or a bittorrent file. The more robust clients have bittorent support built in.

MPAA And Bittorrent Seal Deal
Here’s the deal. People use Bittorrent to download both legal and illegal software. The thing is, Bittorrent, developed by Bram Cohen, is mainly used by pirates all around the world. Hell, I even use it to download software and movies from TorrentSpy, Piratebay, and Mininova. No one can stop the people from using it to download illegal stuff. On the upside, there are also legitimate software available in Bittorrent. Like the stuff from Fileshack. So their solution, Bram and the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) has made a deal to take down illegal downloads from the Bittorrent Search engine. This may minimize piracy but I’m almost sure that they can never put a stop to it. If it were up to me, if I really wanted to abolish piracy, I would directly ban Bittorrent. I know it’s a big price to pay, but how far are you all willing to go to stop illegal downloads?

RIAA: Cracking Is OK If Done Correctly
Don’t even get me started about personal responsibility. Are we really the mindless sheep these people think we are? Everybody using eMule, Grokster, Limewire, Morpheus, Bittorrent, etc. . . knows exactly what they are doing. But it cuts both ways. It is not the job of a plaintiff to exact a punishment on a defendant before a trial. We have an entire court system for that. If a gun maker made a firearm that blew up when it thought it was in the hands of a criminal, what do you suppose would happen? They would be charged with murder, that’s what.

This Week In Tech
After a one week hiatus (if you didn’t notice, there was no TWIT last week) another TWIT is in the can! This week’s hosts are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, John C. Dvorak, and Alex Lindsay, with special guest Lawrence Lessig [ http://lessig.org/blog ] of Creative Commons [ http://creativecommons.org/ ]! This week’s video is already up and available via bittorrent, as you’ll see at the episode notes page. Sadly, I have to admit that this week’s TWIT isn’t really the format that I would have liked; I prefer the larger panel discussions and the traipsing from topic to topic that lends itself to massive show notes and a great deal of information, but this week’s seemed to be a bit more slow and dull, although the subject matter was very interesting. I like departures like this, delving deeply into important topics (and Creative Commons is very important!) but at the same time it was missing the vividity and life of the previous TWIT podcasts. Oh well, can’t hit them all out of the park, or please everyone for that matter-I’m sure lots of people loved this week’s!

Ubuntu Linux for Novices
The first thing I noticed was how clean the desktop was… it was empty! I am used to it being littered with links to the distribution’s website or trivial shortcuts to “home.” The user interface is simple and pleasing with a nice icons and cursors. Ubuntu is a powerful operating system, with the version 2 of OpenOffice.org, a BitTorrent client, Mozilla Firefox, and gAIM instant messenger, among others, preinstalled. Ubuntu is much faster than OS X on my computer in terms of booting and general system tasks. It has a lot less to load up and doesn’t have to load any fancy graphics. I did not notice any lag in the menus or the file explorer, nautilus. I was impressed at how all of my hardware worked flawlessly. The only thing that did not work was Wi-Fi via the Apple Airport Extreme card but I already knew about that. Just for a test, I plugged in several USB devices and all were recognized and functioning. This is a major relief as I remember my Gentoo Linux days where I would have to enter some lines in the terminal to mount or unmount anything.

Gizmo Project
As soon as you mention the word VoIP, everyone responds with “Skype?” This immediately gets me into an discussion why people should not use Skype. The fact that your computer is used as a link to route traffic, much like BitTorrent. That it is based on a proprietary protocol, only known by Skype, so no other manufacturers can make compatible equipment without permisson (and probably a big fat wad of cash) to Skype Corporation.

My Bittorrent Switch
So for the past six months or so I’ve been using Azureus as my faithful Bittorrent client. Very nicely done program, good interface, lots of features. But, it is an amazing resource hog as it is a Java based application and can cause the Java runtime environment to reach nearly 200MB in memory usage. My machine has no problems handling the load, as it is a Dual Core CPU with 1GB RAM and RAID 0 SATA Drives, but this is just really more than I am willing to give up just for sharing some files. I’ve spent lots of time perfecting my Bittorrent configuration and have things working beautifully, but I finally decided to switch to a new client that is less resource intensive.

And finally, before I end this briefness today, I think Bill Maher’s Real Time program (download it off bittorrent those of us outside the US) is actually a dam good show. It’s filled with occasional crap and Bill himself is often sexist, racist, and all-around annoying. But when it comes down to it, the man makes great points and I absolutely loved Spike Lee on there this past week.

Downloading the latest OpenOffice.org release, the much-anticipated version 2.0 final, via BitTorrent. Finding Music Online
Once the critical mass of music blogs has been reached, there is enough content spread across the internet so that new tools are developed to make searching a locating the music easier. For examle, the top two results from the Google BlogSearch on “Arctic Monkeys” would provide you with an adequate introduction to the band and let you listen to pretty much all the songs that are floating around the internet. Additionally, by going to Blogdigger.com and doing the Audio/Video search you can see different blogs that link to the band’s songs and videos. The main advantage of finding music this way, as opposed to downloading the songs from Kazaa/BitTorrent/etc, is that besides listening to their songs you can find out what the band is all about, read about their concerts and participate/review the disscussions in the comments sections.

The New iMac, iPod And The Future
This is one of the biggest changes in the history of modern content, but not for the reason you’re thinking. Sure, being able to buy a TV show or music video or animated short to watch on your iPod is neat, but the real story here is video podcasts. If you’ve got the money for bandwidth, or Apple includes BitTorrent, you can roll your own TV show. Am I the only one who sees this? If Wil decides he wants to start acting again, he can go buy a DV camera, fire up iMovie and attach it to his RSS feed. Then someone subscribes to the feed in iTunes, and can watch it on their Mac or their iPod. No networks.

I got Dugg!
Earlier this evening an article I had written about configuring the Azureus bittorrent client was posted on the frontpage of LifeHacker.com. A few minutes later I found hits coming in from Digg. Less than 20 minutes later, I was on the frontpage of Digg! This is a huge deal to me because I visit Digg several times a day and to have my article on there is an awesome feeling. Right now I am just sitting back, RedBull in hand, keeping an eye on my Mint stats. At the time of this post I’ve received over 2,500 unique hits within the past 2-3 hours. Compare that to my regular 100-200 unique hits a day. You can check out the Digg page here.

Mickey DVD's
Alas, the kiosks are glorified vending machines. Before I looked into the technology, I wondered whether it was feasible to build a DVD kiosk out of a DVD burner, a credit card reader, and a high-speed internet connection running, say BitTorrent. Not yet, maybe. Not that Hollywood would be likely to go down this road, but a studio that licensed its library and created a real Celestial Jukebox — at $1 to burn a disk — might put a real dent in Blockbuster’s business, and even take some wind out of the DVD-burner supply house known as NetFlix.

Suprnova.org Is Back
I find this interesting. Back in the day when I first started using Bittorrent, SuprNova was my prime source for all things. I knew of a few other torrent websites but they did not compare. Then SuprNova went down because of lawsuits, and a ton of new bittorrent websites popped up. One of my favorite websites, lokitorrent.com, eventually got shut down because of lawsuits I believe as well. After that, I looked around and there were literally hundreds of bittorrent sites. Recently there have been a ton of invite-only websites, invites given out similar to the way that Gmail’s invite system works. Can anyone remember something similar happening a few years ago, possibly a lawsuit against Napster? That spawned the outbreak of many new P2P clients, such as Kazaa, Limewire, WinMX, and others.

Anonymous Bittorrent
It’s a real shame that Bittorrent has such a ridiculously bad rap - it’s a great way for legal fileswapping. Amateur film developers have their movies distributed through Bittorrent - and apart from saving the huge bandwidth costs associated with online hosting, seeing the amount of seeders and leechers can give someone a decent idea of how popular the file is.

µTorrent
Yeah tbh this BitTorrent client is totally worth mentioning. It does all the important things that Azureus does, and with none of the crap. And here’s the best part: the file is 82k, its an exe that you can just run, it uses about 2.5megs of ram (on my computer anyway…compared to the 50megs that azureus took up). So that’s pretty safe. Check it out.

They’ve so far covered topics such as A Warspying box, MythTV, AV Cables, Podcasting and a slightly Shorter episode (cleverly dubbed a “subSystm” ) that covers how to crack open the iPod Nano. There are direct downloads for older files, but using Bittorrent is highly encouraged.

Future Of RSS
After writing my last post I went to the Panel Discussion The Future of RSS: Beyond Blogging, in which Amar Ghandhi (GPM on the RSS platform), Doug Purdy (LPM on WCF), the CTO of Newsgator (forgot his name), the Chief Architect on MBS (forgot his name too), the RSS Evangelist at Amazon (you get the drift), a PM on Start.com, aswell as Robert Scoble. The discussion was okay, but was pretty main stream. As Erik Dibbern Röser and I talked about, it would be interesting if Microsoft explained their vision with RSS, not just that it should be used, but how it correlates with Web Services and the WCF stack, and when should it be used.

Those cheapskates who plan only getting the free version will be missing out on 9 extra B-sides and outtakes that will only be included with the retail version.

RSS: What's In A Name?
What do I mean? Well, realistically anything created today to bring RSS to the masses ought to be doing so with half a thought towards podcasting (can’t wait to see what Microsoft try to change that one to!). Sure, its ‘just’ RSS with enclosures but with the discussions currently going on with regard to the potential bandwidth problems podcasters face, who knows what direction that will take? BitTorrent is the current favourite solution (other than a fat pipe and a fat wallet) but who knows? And either way, how is that then a “web” feed? OK, yes I know its still HTTP but we’re trying to make this less techy aren’t we?

The Next Ten Years
What's significant is the additional billion users will not be geeks but just ordinary user. Yep, geeks like us will be outnumbered! And to them, Internet is just a tool, like a phone and the uses of Internet is far more important then the technology driving it. We already seeing more attention have been given to the applications (bittorrent, skype, blogs) and less into the core networking technology (ipv6, ipsec) in the last couple of years.

Potter Pirates
I’m not sure I buy that. I bought my copy of HBP late Sunday. My wife left town on a business trip early Monday while I was only about halfway through the book. Rather than make her wait until she came back, I went and downloaded the ripped PDF over BitTorrent. Would I have paid ”$5 or $10” for something I already “owned” in dead-tree format? Doubtful. This was a convenience issue, and since it was so easy, it was the obvious thing to do. I suppose I “pirated” it, but to my mind, having a digital copy of something I’d paid for was legit fair use, but I’d have only do that at no cost.

Looks like we're seeing some interdiction of BitTorrent networks: "Difficult time for EZTV".
Apparently, the interdictors are trying to sap the bandwidth of seeding sites and downloaders (whose resources are considerably limited). While this is no problem for the large seeding sites, it's a considerable problem for the downloaders.

Windows Calls It 'Vista'
Microsoft announced today the actual, real name of its new operating system – apparently “Longhorn” was a working title. The new windows, Windows 2006 if you will, will be named “Windows Vista” – and its first beta shall ship on August 3, and probably be available on bittorrent within twelve hours. Hell it might be out now for all I know. The actual launch is set to take place in the second half of 2006, five years after XP – which is the longest it has taken Windows to get to a new round of products.

The above screenshot is from the PDF version of the upcoming Agile Web Development with Rails book. They have these PDF-aware gerbils at The Pragmatic Programmer that generate (and regenerate upon request when a new version is out) PDFs on the fly, with your name on the bottom of each page.
Having your name plastered all over the place is one sure way to discourage sharing it with friends or on file sharing networks. Imagine what would happen if the publisher found out htat you’re the guy responsible for the book ending up on BitTorrent?

Tech TV: Resurrected?
Is Tech TV being ressurected? It surely seems so. With Leo Laporte starting up the ‘This Week In Tech‘ Podcast, Kevin Rose’s and Dan Huard’s ‘the broken‘ and ‘systm‘, Yoshi DeHerrera’s ‘From The Shadows‘, Diggnation, and Command-N it just seems like this is the resurgence of Tech TV, but on the internet. These shows take advantage of BitTorrent and other programs like IPodderX to get their content around. These guys(and girls) seem to be quite content with keeping their stuff on the web, and that’s a great first step for the future of quality internet multimedia.

Getting 30 Days
I was more than impressed by the cine, that I went on to watch the first episode and absolutely bamboozled! I thought I should spread the word around; thankfully people can download the series using BitTorrent. What they need, if they have not have it yet, is to install the freeware BitComet, available on the net. Then, go to Bittorrent.com, and type in ‘30 Days’ in the search box. The next obvious step is to download the appropriate epidose. I have not watch the other series, but the 1st episode and the 3rd episode, are clean and extremely good. Make your brain thinking, they do!

Video Casting Problems
Also, going with another codec for the video cast is just not an option. I know I may seem like an Apple geek right now but the only reason I had to start doing Pod/Videocasting was because iTunes did it all, letting me, for the first time, deliver media to the masses without being tech support. Dealing with questions/explanations on how to use bittorrent, DivX, or any other superior possibility is something I cannot do. Honestly, we live in a one click world, and iTunes is the only thing that can do one click audio/video delivery for the user.

Supreme Court Bows To Big Business
Huge wins for large media companies and cable companies, however. Grokster and other file-sharing companies are toast. It’ll be interesting to see how this affects BitTorrent, which is getting a lot of legitimate use (like distributing Linux releases). Consumers also lose with the overturning of a prior decision forcing cable companies to open their lines to other broadband providers.

Essential OSX Programs
Bittorrent if you don’t know, is swarm based downloading. For more information you can go here. I use it mostly to download Linux torrents, and game demos from sites such as 3dgamers.com. I have used Azureus for over a year in windows and in Linux. Being java based, once I installed Java 1.5 it ran flawlessly in osx. Woo! Some of its great features is that it can download multiple torrents at the same time, along with rate limiting your upload. This helps keep my latency down on the network, and speed up downloads.

Free Software And Society
Click through for the entire article.

BitTorrent Versus Ourmedia
I decided to use Ourmedia for the video storage, though with the low volume I certainly could have used our own dedicated servers and bandwidth. To save on bandwidth expenses for delivery I could also have gone the BitTorrent route, but that takes extra time and one of my goals was to keep the time down. Time is my most least available resource. The process of tagging the video and publishing to Ourmedia took less than five minutes and the video was available within an hour.

Hell's Kitchen
i caught the second half of the third episode of Hell’s Kitchen last night on FOX, and proceeded to download 1 and 2 off bittorrent. man, this show is awesome. i love watching the wannabe chefs scramble when gordon ramsay screams at them. basically, gordon is just horrible to these people, trying to break them. he figures if they can put up with him, they can put up with anything and they can run their own restaurant. it’s a good philosophy, my dad was kind of the same way. he’d scream and scream and scream and eventually i’d be able to block it out and not take it personally. the people on the show aren’t quite there yet, some of them nearly break into tears when he looks at them. seriously. anyway, it’s awesome.

Essentially, it aims to show that while many people walk around with iPods filled to the brim with their favorite tracks, barely any of them are from the iTunes Music Store. Granted, the data is a bit outdated as it is from April 2004, I think it is safe to say that the data probably hasn’t changed all that much. Based on their calculations, in April 2004, if you divided the number of songs sold on iTunes by the number of iPods out there, you would find an average of 21 iTunes songs per iPod. Now I understand that many people rip CD’s that they have purchased legally to their computers as well, and this accounts for a percentage of the music on iPods - but I will go out on a limb and say that is a small percentage as well. Gotta love Bittorrent.

On A BitTorrent Near You
Oh and by the way kids (I mean, kids with HBO and/or BitTorrent), if you were wondering, both Lisa Kudrow’s ‘The Comeback’ and the season premiere for ‘Six Feet Under’ were fucking fabulous. It makes me cry to think that these kind of shows are so few and far in between, that is shows that assume that the viewer is intelligent, not a nimrod.

Bittorrent
Bittorrent is a peer-peer protocol used for file distribution. What is good about it is that every downloader also acts as an uploader. The file is divided into smaller sized chunks, each with SHA1 hash. This is great for countering “slashdot effects”, downloading the iso images immediately after they are released. I doubt, though, if it is very useful for longer term links…

From The Shadows
While listening to This Week In Tech earlier this week they mentioned a show one of them is involved in called From the Shadows. It’s like a tech show, but it’s not on TV, it’s a download, kind of like a podcast, but with video. Topics so far have been light sabre replicas that can be used for full-force dueling, WarDrving/Flying, WEP Cracking, and wireless mobile gaming. It’s really really cool! A bit hefty on the d-loads (the episode on WIFI was 200+ megs divx) but using bittorrent it was pretty fast.

BitTorrent Doesn't Pirate Movies, People Do
What brings me to mention BitTorrent here is a rather well-known hosting company with several branches worldwide, 1&1 Internet Inc., who have recently told one of their customers they can’t distribute their own content through BitTorrent, presumably because of its use by pirating rings.

Command-N
Read the entire article. If you have a video camera/webcam and a PC (or better yet a Mac), now is a great time to start experimenting with these technologies. I'm seeing more-and-more quality content hit the web on an almost daily basis. Speaking of which, yesterday my friend Amber (co-host of CFH Canada) emailed me a link to their latest indie downloadable tech show 'Command-N'. In this episode they cover some current tech topics and even roll-in a BitTorrent howto. This is a great example of just how easy it is to create your own downloadable show...

BitTorrent NOT Shut Down

BitTorrent Share Ratios
Here's a random question that came to me this morning. I download a lot over BitTorrent. Mostly shows from taper friendly bands, so it's all legal. I wrote a long time ago how I thought BitTorrent was the ultimate hippie application and I still continue to believe this. It's great to be able to get all these shows and the everyone helping each other nature of BitTorrent goes along very well with the culture of the jam band scene.

IPTV vs. Internet Television
What is the difference between IPTV, the Internet Protocol-based TV paradigm heralded by major telecom providers and large media groups and the Internet Television painted by the Long Tail phenomenon, Ourmedia, the Internet Archive, Brightcove, and the availability of amazing new technology opportunities such as faster and faster net connections, free unlimited storage space, BitTorrent, MPEG4 and powerful low-cost hardware and software production tools?

Testing BitTorrent's Search
Click through for many more tests. The first search I attempted was for something legal, Firefox. The entire site, front page and results page, look a lot like Google, but I suppose that's typical of most any search engine these days. Anyway, there were 22 results for Firefox, and not one of them was the latest version. In fact, the latest version I could find was 1.0.2, which is two versions behind.

Turning The Web Into TV
Somehow, having had a look at some of this stuff, Bleeding Edge is pretty sure it's going to end in bitter disappointment for them. The Web was a great place to find TV programs and download them via BitTorrent - before the studios turned their attention to destroyhing that - but we just can't see it replacing the television set.

Blame The People, Not The Software
For those using Bittorrent, this really scares me. If they’re only targeting people using Bittorrent for movie, music, and application downloads, then why are TV sites pulling themselves offline? Thank goodness a few are sticking around like tvtorrents. Did you hear? The MPAA is blaming BitTorrent on the illegal Star Wars vid floating around. Next, they might blame the internet or everyone’s computers for accessing the internet. Blame the people who misuse it, not the software itself.

The operation, codenamed D-elite, targeted administrators and content providers working through the EliteTorrents website.

Bram Cohen's Search
Bram Cohen has posted a beta of a trackerless BitTorrent client. Once it goes final it’s expected to make the MPAA, BSA and RIAA’s elaborate game of litegation Whack-a-Mole even more difficult, as noted by ZDNet Australia. As well as that, it should speed things up, presuming that torrent files will now get wider distribution and swarms will become bigger. Here’s Slashdot’s lowdown:

Confused About EliteTorrents
This kind of thing has a limited lifetime, because Bittorrent has gone trackerless. What this means is that once a full copy is out there somewhere, the network becomes very resistant to taking down any particular copy. I’ve written about the MPAA’s problems with this before, but I feel the need to reiterate: this is not something that you can just make go away. It’s not a technology, it’s a technique. The ability to reconstruct a whole from disparate parts, without a central resource means that it doesn’t help to shut...

Friends in High Places
Apparently the MPAA, no longer content with getting Spanish academics fired, has decided to up the ante. They’ve convinced the Justice Department to start filing criminal charges against organizers of BitTorrent networks. In a press relase pulished to the interestingly named file starwars52505.htm, (at least they’re honest about what’s really going on) the Department of Homeland Security – who knew? – announced the “First Criminal Enforcement Against BitTorrent Network Users” yesterday. The sad thing is that it’s difficult, if not impossible, to defend people who put up torrents of “Revenge of the Sith” six hours before it was released so the important points will, as usual, be overlooked, such as the outright silliness of shutting down networks because to get at criminals use them as means of transport.

BitTorrent rocks. So many people use it to exchange movies, commercial games and seedy seedy porn. And why not? Anyways, BT inventor Bram Cohen has launched bittorrent.com/ - a sweet BitTorrent search engine.

"...the content industries may find the [new] BitTorrent search engine too useful to mess with. "The copyright owners can now identify the most-trafficked materials that are infringing their copyrights and go after them in a more efficient way," says Lemley. "It's kind of ironic.""

Usenet And BitTorrent
And, it's getting safer. Since it is not a peer to peer network (like Kazaa, BitTorrent, and others), it is harder for the Authority figures to track the people who download files from them. That can mean less liability for the end user, and a huge freaking headache for said authority figures.

Stupid MPAA
But the MPAA wants to make my life much more difficult. One of the biggest things that gets me going besides the whole evolution debate is this one. First the MPAA sued the site that I used to find the shows, btefnet, which caused them to stop releasing them. Actually, this site didn’t contain the shows. It contained links that opened up Bittorrent, which is a program used to transfer files. It is fundamentally different from programs like Napster, in two ways. First, unlike Napster, there are no “central servers” for Bittorrent....

MPAA BitTorrent Bad Bad Bad
Remember all those things RIAA used to say about music piracy and Napster. Well, do a “find-replace” with MPAA and BitTorrent, and you get the same hysterical statements. MPAA president Dan Glickman says, “We must stop these Internet thieves from illegally trading valuable copyrighted materials on-line.” MPAA is blaming BitTorrent for Revenge of the Sith piracy. That’s like calling matches, not cigarettes, cause cancer. How about learning from music’s mistakes, and figuring out ways to sell the content legally?...

Customer Experience Can Make You Money
Read the entire article.Disruption in the media and technology space is trending towards putting control in the hands of the user. Adoption of technologies like BitTorrent, RSS, and web services are providing the foundation on which users are building tools to consume content on their own terms. To figure out what users want in this space, it's often useful to look at and think about user behavior (not user opinion) to figure out how to fill unmet needs.

At least two copies of the film, which was first shown in theaters in the early hours of Thursday, have been posted to the BitTorrent file-sharing network — a new and increasingly popular technology that allows users to download large video files much more quickly than in the past.

Azureus 2.3.0.0 Released
Azureus is, bar none, the greatest BitTorrent client ever. Of all the BitTorrent clients I have ever used, it has the most pleasent and extensive UI for the most demanding torrenters, and a number of awesome plug-ins. Version 2.3.0.0 of this torrent beast finally gives us decentralized tracking… so now, torrents from the long-dead SuprNova or Lokitorrent now have a way to “finish business.” Thus, it can also encourage the speed of today’s torrents by introducing us to a wider audience. Words can not express how much joy this program gives me.

New BitTorrent Makes Distribution Easier

BitTorrent Goes Trackerless
I'm sure everyone knows what BitTorrent is, but it is the most popular peer-to-peer file sharing protocol for sharing large files. Before you had to have a tracker to create "torrents" which coordinated this sharing, but now you don't. This should make it even easier for people to make BitTorrent enclosures in blog entries and otherwise use BitTorrent to share files. Having said that, there are value added trackers like Prodigem which I'm sure people will use to charge for and otherwise track their files.

Cease or Be Deceased
It takes pretty big balls to hand out pirated copies of the final Star Wars movie. I won’t deny I’ve “borrowed” and “shared” a few movies in my time. But I’d be hesitant even just googling “Revenge of the Sith DIVX”, let alone firing up a bittorrent download of it. George Lucas is the Metallica of the movie industry. He’s just itching to get somebody’s nuts in a vice over movie piracy.

BBC Testing TV Download Service
Clearly this is linked to the fact that Brits have become accustomed to downloading American TV shows via BitTorrent rather than suffer the months-long wait for new programs to jump across the pond. Now we here at BBB can live just fine with almost every Asian country being more advanced technologically than us. However, our blood boils over when even the Limeys have us beat. Isn’t there a reason for that whole little revolution thingy? They have a monarchy! These people are about as cutting edge as tea with crumpets and they’re ahead...
