Thematic Maps
But I want do write all of this quickly, so will use Ruby on Rails instead of Java. I thought about finding out how to access Java from RoR but realised that I might as well keep Richard’s code in its own Java web app and call it using HTTP from the Ruby web app.

Welcome To Bittorrent
Bittorrent users account for less than 15% of users (geeks like me) but they use 50% of the total bandwidth of the internet, thats how many movies are zipping around the web!

Microsoft Acquires Health Search Engine Medstory
I think Microsoft’s acquisition brings up a bunch of things. Vertical search engines in the past haven’t had their 15 seconds of fame — given the volume, they’ve rather been ignored and overlooking. Microsoft acquiring a search engine and Google acquiring things like JotSpot and Writely seem to show how important both the company’s fields are and how important it is for them to expand.

EzineArticles And IE7
It took me about 10-15 minutes to wrap everything up and I was pretty happy with what I had written. Then I go to preview what I wrote - simple enough. But no - IE7 (which I used to like, then I didn’t, then I kind of did until just now) decides to block the popup - apparently Mr. Gates didn’t get the memo that we all have several effective popup blockers already installed and we don’t need yet another one.

Rails Acts As Authenticated Plugin
What is the first model you would create when developing a Ruby on Rails based web service? Mostly likely you would create a user model so as to authenticate users and grant them certain business specific privileges. Creating the required table, model, and views for a user is so common that there exists a great Rails plugin for the task. Acts as Authenticated is a plugin generator that will create your base user model and views required for a user-centric web application. Just like previous plugins, you need download and install the plugin by using the ’script/plugin install URL’ command where you replace URL with the following.

Flex And The Developer Experience
If Excel had been made in Flex originally, Microsoft wouldn’t have to change a thing. Their biggest challenge would be to create a business model that supported a web-friendly version of the product, but practically none of the code would need any sort of update to be ready for the web. Countless man-hours could be saved. The same comparison could be made between Writely, now Google documents, and Word; outlook and gmail, or yahoo mail, or even hotmail; Flickr and iPhoto, or just about any other desktop application that has an online equivalent.

DRM'd!
Sure, its still kind of just looking through crap loads of memory calls to find an AACS processing key, but it works on every current title. I cant say I’m loving the idea of downloading 20gb rips via bittorrent, but the h264 encodes of said movies should be marvellous.

Presentations In Google Suite?
Most likely, the final name will not be Presently, but, going with the Docs & Spreadsheets theme, the additions will be Google Presentations and Google Databases. I’d be shocked if they got a creative name, especially after Google dumped the Writely name for “Docs”.

OfficeLive Web Design
The view is that OfficeLive offers partners plenty of commercial opportunities such as website design services and consultancy. However, I also see it helping you to keep existing clients as well. For example, the MD of your client wants you to design a website for his son’s football team and you know you’ll be too expensive. Don’t want to lose him? No problem! Just give him an OfficeLive site and your client is a happy bunny.

Ruport News
As if that wasn’t enough new developments, there are more. Gregory Brown will give a presentation at the Boston Ruby Group on February 13. The presentation will consist of a short introduction to Ruport and a demonstration of a camping application running on top of Ruport. On the heels of that talk, Gregory will be attending the Mountain West Ruby Conference on March 16-17. While there, he will give a talk about the “tools, techniques, and practices necessary to build a successful free software project.” Gregory will refer to his experiences with Ruport and will therefore be able to give pragmatic advice on getting through choke points during a project’s growth.

Japanese Cuteness
Cuteness permeates every episode. I guess such unpretentious and sincere cuteness is why I genuinely like Someday’s Dreamers. The entire premise of the series is cute, the protagonist is painfully cute, and the whole series is saturated in cuteness. Don’t take my word for it. Download some episodes via BitTorrent and see for yourself. =)
