Blu-ray Courtesy Of BitTorrent

Blu-ray ripped and transferred to BitTorrent.

With the release of the BackupBluray utility, we knew it was just a matter of time before Blu-ray rips started to appear on torrent trackers. The prediction has now come true, Blu-ray rips are now being seeded right along side HD DVD rips.

Bend, Don't Break

Any help from the audience on this AJAX problem?

On a more practical note, if someone could tell me how to combine the functionality of Kashou’s Inline Ajax Comments with Mike Smullin’s Ajax Comments 2.0, I’d be incredibly grateful. I fiddled plenty, but it’s not something I’m like to figure out on my own.

Out With Onfolio, In With Reader

A Google Reader convert.

I have been using Onfolio blog reader since I installed MSN Live toolbar sometime ago; its nothing special but does the job. The biggest problem for me is that onfolio stores state offline so when I read a blog at work (during lunch of course!) it gets marked as read but then when I go home I have to mark it as read again....bit of a pain but at the time I had a look at Google reader and didn't like it so stuck it out with Onfolio.

Nuevo Yahoo! Correo

This blogger prefers the new Yahoo! mail to Gmail.

Information Architecture

Website designers should check out Information Architecture concepts.

There are volumes on IA that go well beyond the scope of a single blog entry, and I encourage anyone who is interested in website design or simple surfing to at least browse one or two, if not take the time to thoroughly study the concepts. The larger websites of the world are designed by teams these days, and those teams typically have a person or person(s) responsible for and educated in IA, but the majority of sites are still put together by individuals who give cursory if any consideration for the organization of the content within the sites. (There are still large organizations that apparently have little or no understanding of IA, or else have allowed the concepts to fall victim to internal politics — I won’t name names, but will generalize that higher education and some e-commerce sites are impossible to comfortably surf on occasions.)

Addicted To Gmail

To Gmail at work, or not to Gmail at work.

My pangs of withdrawal continued until I got a mysterious email from an AOL address I didn’t recognize. I clicked through my spam blockers, which informed me the email contained content “forbidden under company policy.” More sleuthing revealed that the email had been sent to me (apparently by mistake) at 10:13 a.m. from the AOL account of one of our VPs. The “forbidden content”? An invite to her holiday party. From then on, I figured if AOL was good enough for a VP, it was good enough for me. -Submitted by “Bored in Boston”

Coolplayer Embeds Cell Phone Video

If you're getting your video online, check out the coolplayer plugin for wordpress ... tested with Firefox!

The width and height can be modified to any size you want. The autoplay feature and looping can be turned on and off by using “true” or “false”. So far, I tested it on my old mac in Firefox and Safari. It works in Firefox, but not so well in Safari, in fact, not at all in Safari. All I see is the static quicktime logo sitting there, all quiet, taunting me. If your on a windows machine, I’d like to know if you’re able to play the clip.

Perl, PHP And Ruby, Oh My!

Notes from a Ruby Fest in Chicago.

I’ve been moping about this week about Ruby… I haven’t done it in about 4-5 months since being back in PHP-Land? I’m having withdrawals. It all started after I read this article Technologies of the Year 2006 (BTW -I have done all of them!). I was thinking ..awwww… Rails…. and I picked up my Rails book at work that I look at when I am fed up with PHP, just to cheer me up a bit. I skipped the last Ruby meeting, at the last minute the buddies that I thought would go with me backed out.. and.. well.. I was pretty tired and the topic of “Environments” made me think it would be a mac-love fest. I used to want a mac laptop, but… I’ve decided to stick with the PC environment since I am happiest in Ubuntu.

OpenID And Mozilla

A love-fest between Firefox and OpenID?

Alright, so there wasn’t any actual kissing going on, but there was a great meeting on OpenID and Firefox 3.0 at Mozilla this afternoon. We’ve heard that Mozilla was interested in supporting OpenID in Firefox 3.0, but what does that really mean?

Larger Resolution And Design Options

As display resolution changes, so does website design.

The trend toward 1024 and 1280 resolutions means more than you might think. When designing for 800×600 we typically keep “important” items such as navigation, news scrollers, images, key text, etc. above 400px. We call this the ‘fold line’. This term is more commonly used by Newspapers to determine placement for news stories. Newspapers put their best stories in the upper half of the page ( or above the “fold”). A website design concept with an overall height of 700px high means navigation and key elements should be in the top 400 pixels to make sure people browsing at 800×600 resolution view the content without having to scroll down. But, if the accepted standard shifts from 800×600 to 1024×768, your “fold-line” moves down and you have more of that non-scrollable real estate to devote to key web elements. If the trend shifts towards 1280, as the graph suggests, you have even more.

El Efecto Digg

A Firefox dig in a post about Digg in Latin America.

Free TACACS+ Server Software

Cisco offers TACACS+ as free software, but it's not supported.

Cisco offers a free version of TACACS+ that you can download. However, please note that it is not a fully supported version. In fact, Cisco seldom updates the free TACACS+ daemon and it lacks several of the advanced features of commercially available TACACS+ software.
