Inverting Portals

A discussion about using Zcubes instead of AJAX.

This is difficult to achieve in your everyday portals - even if it looks pretty. And especially when based on the totally unscaleable technology called AJAX! There are millions of users in the world, and scaling up with AJAX is like feeding a country. Microsoft Live is a classic example where this has been a perpetual scalability problem.

Thoughts On Ruby Performance

Click through for the discussion on Ruby on Rails performance.

There was a lot of discussion about the Joel’s post Ruby Performance Revisited. I guess this was just a flamebait, but I’ll bite. Here’s the relevant quote (bold emphasis mine):

Mininova On BitTorrent

Maybe Mininova knows where TV production is headed: BitTorrent.

And now for something else, the guys over at BitLord have released a TV show for the BitTorrent community. Mininova also plays a prominent part being the sponsor of the Torrent Top List. The guys at BitLord told me the first episode would be a first attempt at a show so they will improve it as time goes. But I have to say, the first episode is a nice start. Make sure to download the first episode here.

Prototype Javascript

Click through for link on Prototype Javascript.

Prototype is the Ruby-like Javascript library that is best known as a part of the Ruby on Rails infrastructure. I was going to write about how awesome it is, but instead, I’m just going to link you the appropriate resources. If this is for you, then you’ll recognize the awesome. If not, then not.

Java EE Versus RoR Versus .NET

A comment on a comment about The Definitive Guide to Grails.

This will be a lenghty post because this is a subject I’m bothering with for a longer time. The reason I’m writing it now is a comment I got from James McGovern to my post about the book “The Definitive Guide To Grails”. James has spend some time in investigating the security model of enterprise content management (ECM) systems. He asked me about the security model of Ruby On Rails (RoR) and how this security model is better than in J2EE.

WPF/E - First Steps

WPF/E from Microsoft is a browser enhancement module that enables browsers to render rich content in addition to HTML.

I see great scenarios for "WPF/E" (Code Name). Java Servlets, JSPs, ASP.NET, PHP and any other server side engine can emit XAML just by detecting the browser capability. This can offer a "rich to reach" scenario. If I am not compatible with WPF/E, I would only see a simple text data and if I happen to use a compatible browser, I see a great chart with a lot of interactivity. Add a flavor of AJAX to it and you have a great recipe for serving amazing web experiences. I am already setting up Apache Tomcat to emit XAML from a servlet. I will post my findings very soon.

Six New Ways To Get A Job

If you need a job, try creating the next web service Google wants to buy. It worked for the Writely crew.

Writely is an example of this tactic — Google bought the company while the software was in beta, and now the Writely team works at Google.

Java 6 Is Faaast

Good news if you're using Ruby on Rails or Groovy.

After open sourcing the Java platform and the great news about Java 7 like upcoming closures support I think Java’s future is secured and more interesting than ever before. Groovy and Grails are also two very nice additions to the Java platform regaining some of the lost terrain from Ruby and Ruby on Rails. Exciting times for the Java community!

The Beginnings

Learning all about Ruby on Rails.

And that is how it all began. I recently discovered that Dreamhost has full Ruby On Rails support and I’m working learning this unique development environment/framework. As easy as I’ve said it is to develop applications, it is a bit of a challenge to understand the concepts at times. I’m not used to dealing with a “framework” per-se but I’m up for a good challenge!

"Freetown" And Freetown

The developer of Freetown has some words about free software and open source.

She’s right. My only quibble is that what we’re doing isn’t just making any old basic software. We’re unique in that we create tools, and those tools are by and for the sector we work in. When a tool doesn’t exist, and we see a need - an itch that can be scratched, to use the old Free Software term - we create the tool to address the need.

Well there goes another torrent client down the drain :( (it would have been better if they would have just stopped the development like TorrentStorm did years back)

Adobe Contributes To Mozilla

Adobe opens up the Flash Player Scripting Engine, and that'll help even with AJAX.

With the efficiency and performance advances that we have with AVM2, we can expect to see this for the new JavaScript engine as well. So, previously demanding JavaScript applications may become more feasible (including AJAX applications).

Instructions And Forms

Will FormAssembly be bought by Google like Writely was?

I am adding some Form Templates from FormAssemby, which will be covered under the Creative Commons license. I originally heard about them from the Wall Street Journal, and they look like another candidate to be bought by Google. Just like Writely and JotSpot.

TALL Tuesday 2.0

Looking at Web 2.0.

After Epic 2015, we figured it apropos to begin our exploration of Web 2.0 tools with those offered by Google. A few people already had Gmail access, but most had to create new accounts. We briefly looked at the e-mail and calendar, partly as a familiar starting point for discussions, but also as way to demonstrate briefly how AJAX and other similar technologies are changing the landscape of the web. Our main reason for using the Google offerings, however, was to introduce Docs & Spreadsheets (formerly Writely), looking especially at the remote access and collaboration features.

Announcing Scala With Sails

Ruby on Rails, Scala with Sails ... what's next, Tigers with Tails?

SwS stresses ease of development by separating model, view and controller and by presenting simple semantics for common tasks as well as "the right thing by default." SwS code for CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) tasks should be as compact (or more compact) and as readable as similar Ruby on Rails code. On the other hand, SwS will support significantly richer state management than RoR. Pages will be composed of many long-lived controller/view objects which maintain state in Monads. Each controller may receive input from user-actions or external actions and may mark its associated view as dirty. Dirty views are sent back to the browser as (1) part of a page reload, (2) as a change "push" responding to an AJAX request or (3) forcing a Comet event. The controllers will be Scala Actors such that they may be hundreds or thousands of live controllers in the system at any one time. Associating code blocks with web links and form elements, SwS allows a very granular HTTP request routing.

How To Use BitTorrent

Click through for some help with BitTorrent.

I have had many people ask me how to use this 'BitTorrent' technology they've been hearing about. It can be rather complicated, and there are many deep articles on the web. However, I prefer to give them a 30 second explanation, and most people are quite happy with that.
