Need a Writely invite?

Writely is a web application which allows you to create, edit and share documents online. The application allows you to upload from Word, publish on the web and even post to your blog. I recently got hold of an invite to beta test this nifty tool. If you would like to try it out, please leave a comment below with your email address. Right now, the beta release is by invite only.

gBrother: Google BigBrother

Google, the Big Brother you never had.

Yes, Google's Services are very cool, nice features, we all love them. But think more about them, think about the search engine itself. Google is tracking every step you do on the internet. First they watch on you while searching for interesting stuff, then they track you (with AdSense and with Analytics) during your visit on a site you found as a search result. They get your credit card information on Google Checkout, they get your personal information an contacts on Orkut, they get your other contacts on Google Mail, they get your letters on writely and your calculations on spreadsheets. Oh don't forget about your interests on Google Movie Search and Google Music Search... and your contributions and searchs on Google Groups. Whew! That's heavy!

Exceptional Webhosting Deal

If you want a web host and use Ruby on Rails, here ya' go.

I use low-cost (but full-featured) hosting accounts for storing media files. I found an exceptional deal… The company is called Blue Host (link is a coupon code for free setup). They provide 15GB of storage space and 400 GB of monthly transfer. They support Ruby on Rails, PHP 5, plus (and this is the big deal) you can have SSH access. I also looked into GoDaddy’s web hosting which is slightly better if you just want disk space and bandwidth.

Aggregated Experience

Good proposal for extending Microsoft's IE work.

The good thing about the project is that they are trying to create a platform of sorts - people can write their own plug-ins. The API is already published. What this leads to is a kind of social networking where you contribute info and get info back ... really cool stuff and the extensibility makes it even more cooler!! Now only if there was deeper integration between Onfolio, CB, Live and some of the other services ... And not just MS ones, think integration with Blogger, Orkut, Flickr, del.ici.ous ... now if each of these services could start exposing APIs, there would be a huge market for clients that would give an aggregated experience across these services.

Protecting Your Online Privacy

From a good post on protecting online privacy, some free software that will help.

Using a proxy software in our computer. There are almost 100 Free software proxies in http://www.download.com. Among them ‘Proxy+ 3.0′ is most popular among the users. There are two types of Proxies HTTP proxy and the CGI proxy. I think the HTTP proxies are faster than the CGI ones.

It's My AJAX

Funny post on AJAX.

Sorry, but I must interrupt this very enjoyable 1950’s commercial for soap to remind you that there is more to life than AJAX. Man cannot live by AJAX alone, and my AJAX lies over the ocean, and…and…never mind. Sure I love AJAX, but I am so sick of everyone making such a big deal about it. To me, AJAX is a great tool to provide extra functionality and a bit of eye-candy. That’s it.

I had an idea for a a Google Maps Mashup so I set about going about it yesterday thinking it was going to be pretty straight forward. Turns out I had to learn a bit a bout Ajax which was good/bad. Anyways so I had bits of my mashup working and I couldn’t for the life work out why a piece of code wasn’t working the way it should… half a day later it clicks…. the variable wasn’t global!……. argh……………..

Using Writely

This blogger talks about using Writely with groups.

A guy on the Gentoo forums was giving away invites to Writely. For those of you who dont know, Writely is an online word processor designed to be used in your web browser. The plus of this service is all the files you work on are saved online, and best of allyou can invite folk to view and edit your documents with you. This sort of program is to me extremely usable, as I like to have folk read over what I’m working on for fics as I work.

Gmail Drive

Some information in Spanish on setting up a Gmail drive.

I was shocked, simply shocked.

Dutch Shut Down Torrent Sites

Some more on the Dutch closure of two BitTorrent sites.

The dutch justice department has released information about the arrest of 2 webmasters that where running torrent sites in the Netherlands. According to the justice department bittorrent is the most used system for copyright violation. Releases4u.com and Shareconnector.com are currently under investigation. What this could mean for other torrent sites that are based in the Netherlands is uncertain since there is no law that forbids torrent sites.

Blue Dot Versus Del.icio.us

Blue Dot is the AJAX version of del.icio.us.

Blue Dot is obviously going to be a lot like del.icio.us. You put a little bookmarklet in your bookmark bar and then when you find an interesting page you click it to add the page to your links (called dots, on Blue Dot). The difference is that Blue Dot really takes advantage of the whole Web 2.0 thing and gives you a nice AJAX-ey window that floats over the current page as seen to the right. This is a theme that you’ll find throughout the Blue Dot site: good use of Web 2.0 technologies to better accommodate the users, and it really helps to distinguish them. Another cool thing is that it will automatically grab images from the site you’re linking to and use them to label the link.

GPL License Issues

A look at the impact of the GPL on free software development.

If that's the case, perhaps Richard Stallman should rewrite the GPL so that it doesn't (rather effectively) hinder small, grass-roots, free software development and distribution projects. Perhaps he ought to use his influence to stop the Free Software Foundation from using the clauses already in the GPL as an excuse to bully small free software development and distribution projects with its legal heft. MEPIS wasn't the only distribution targeted: also take note of the threat of legal action looming over other projects such as Kororaa Xgl LiveCD. John Andrews of Damn Small Linux reportedly agrees with the estimation of MEPIS' founder Warren Woodford that a great many small Linux distribution projects are at significant risk, and new projects are considerably less likely to spring up in the evolving legal climate of the "free" software community.

Automattic: Enterprise Blogging Support

A look at how WordPress has transformed its free software package into a not-for-free enterprise version.

Seems like the developers of WordPresss made such a solid product that they are finally getting paid for it, good for them. The price seems relatively reasonable for an enterprise level blogging solution, to boot. I am wondering how they understand the term “customizable”? I will assume that virtually all of the corporations interested in the Automattic support service will want a Multi-User platform. Yet, WPMU for the open source community is still in the nightly stages, and from my last go-round with it two months ago it was no fun to play with at all - is the Automattic support service rolling out a packaged version of this? -as well as top notch support?

Tiering And BitTorrent

P2P applications like BitTorrent chew up bandwidth.

However, some level of tiering already takes place. Many ISPs actively limit traffic on Bittorrent and other P2P networks. Though this is mostly out of necessity since such applications eat up a great deal of resources, it might be a sign of what's to come.

Flex Time

A funny analogy between Flex Car and Writely.

When I’ve explained Flexcar to people, I’ve sometimes heard the response, “You mean the car might not be there when I need it?” expressed in the exact tone of voice people use when they say, “Store my documents online? What if I’m not online?” Like Flexcar, Writely (which I’m using right now, just for fun) could change its software or its terms of service on me, and all I could do is complain to Google. (Now serving #3923804. Your estimated wait time is three geological ages.)
