Firefox Download Counter
Fans of firefox always want to know how many downloads are occurring in real time by a counter. So came the development of counters and feeds. But I could not figure out to getting one due to the scattered data available. So this post is an effort to find how to place a firefox download counter on your site. Many of these tools are created by efforts of the hard working Firefox teams, supporters and fans. And as firefox nears 100 million downloads, add a firefox download counter to your site and let the world know. Get Firefox!

Paul Flaherty Dies
It is sad to hear that one of the pioneers in search-engine technology passed away young at the age of only 42. Paul Flaherty was one of the driving forces and masterbrains behind (originally) Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC)'s AltaVista, which was one of the first real search engines. I personally liked and used it alot back then and because AV helped me numerous times and saved me countless hours, I really do want to express my compassion and condolences for his friends and family.

Ajaxwrite is the newest online wordprocessor. It opens and saves documents in Word format (you can also save in PDF), has good basic functionality and is fairly fast. (Techcrunch)(I will do a thorough review next week).

Isohunt To Fight MPAA
It’s almost a month after the MPAA targeted 5 of the bigger torrent sites. In the meanwhile Isohunt has been planning to fight the MPAA and is currently raising money to do so. Niteshdw on the other hand doesn’t have the money to fight and tries to settle without taking too much damage.

Meanwhile, In The Real World
For example, a significant part of the traffic generated by BitTorrent-powered P2P (peer-to-peer) networks now provides the ground, the *marketplace* for the exchange of television shows, films, and not just downloading music files. This, of course, has caught the attention (and earned the enmity) of associations like the MPAA.

Should Apple Ditch Safari?
This is very frustrating. I’ve been using Safari for several days now prior after the purchase of my brother’s iBook. The browser break at several sites that I pretty much loved such as Writely. It even broke on my WordPress Admin section by not displaying any quicktags (which I sometimes used).

Ruby On Rails Versus PHP
But seriously, besides Ruby on Rails (duplicate a dozen times in PHP by now with limited success), ActiveRecord (duplicated...yada, yada, yada - I dislike metaprogramming of that nature), and a nifty pure OOP syntax it doesn't really offer anything truly awe inspiring. If you're a purist, with strict OOP-Forever ideals go have fun - but PHP just works better in the real world whether its familiarilty, wasting effort on another language to duplicate what PHP already does well, hosting preferences, or some other reason why PHP is preferable. Maybe in a few years with some maturity under its belt, and more widespread adoption...

ROOT
ROOT is fascinating. ROOT is creating a vault and a market for your attention metadata. Get some context from CEO Seth Goldstein’s talk at ETech. The interface looks like Ajax-y Bloomberg, which shouldn’t be surprising. Goldstein’s blog tagline says it all: “Somewhere between Wall Street and Madison Avenue lies the future of both.” ROOT is Madison Avenue meets Wall Street via Silicon Valley. There are plans to capture attention metadata from websites to videos to music to, well, just about anything that can leave behind metadata breadcrumbs. That data is yours to be stored in /Vault and can be “sold” via /Market. That’s when it all gets fuzzy to me.

Battlestar Galactica Killed Broadcast TV
However, it only took a few hours for the UK premiere of Battlestar Galactica to become a global premiere thanks to peer-to-peer networks like BitTorrent. In general, Sci-Fi fans are pretty geeky. Recording and distributing Battlestar Galactica became a global past time for many Sci-Fi fans. Torrent tracking websites like TorrentSpy have an entire Battlestar Galactica listing with 94 different files.

Google Acquires Sketchup
I don't know what Google has up their sleeve for this product, but it's a break from their previous acquisitions. Sketchup is a serious piece of software, which isn't to say that their previous acquisitions weren't, but think of the difference between Microsoft Paint and Autodesk… Google just bought the equivalent of Autodesk. Sketchup, which is an application not a service like Writely, is also targeted at design professionals and architects, a group of people who wouldn't think twice about coughing up $500 a seat for a tool, which is what Sketchup sold for. I wonder if the Google Earth plugin for Sketchup had anything to do with this?

On My Knees
and unfortunately it has nothing to do with sex. No. I am on my knees begging you all to use Firefox. Thanks to sammelsurium (who just translated this post for Blog Against Sexism Day) for pointing out that my new design looked like utter shit in Internet Explorer. I was a bad designer and didn’t think to check to see if it worked in IE. I’ve just spent a few hours working on the bugs and i think i fixed most of them. However, for now you IE users still won’t be able to correctly view some of the graphics (like the ‘blogroll’ and ‘metafied’ images on the right) because they are PNGs. I’d like to switch them to another format so that all you stubborn IE users can get the full transparent experience, but they just don’t look right. Perhaps i’ll figure it all out later, but for now you’re just going to have to get Firefox or deal with it. Sorry.

This is freakin cool: “Goowy is turning into a lot more than just another ajax/flash home page - its a full on desktop platform that is shaping up to be the best competitor to Microsoft’s Live.com…Goowy is now preparing to roll out additional functionality, including integrated instant messaging (look out Meebo) and online storage (via a partnership with box.net, using box’s new API). If you are a Goowy user, look for these features to be included with your account over the next couple of weeks.” Via [TechCrunch]

Windows Live Toolbar Beta Available
We have released the Windows Live Toolbar beta which adds some really cool technology from Onfolio, a company we just acquired. Onfolio grabs scraps of web pages to be shared or viewed later, which is my favorite part. Also, it allows you to collect and read feed collections via a great reader that is integrated into IE so you can read all your feeds in one place. This is a great tool to help organize information that you find on the web.

Microsoft Buys Onfolio
Microsoft buys Onfolio. Robert Scoble points me to this. I have used Onfolio a lot before, i.e. in late 2004 and early 2005. I have written about in in my previous blog. It is a great product and I am sure Microsoft and it's users will get a lot of value out of it when they integrate it within the toolbars of Microsoft Live. Will it interesting to see in what software will they integrate this tool if they do. To check out what Onfolio has to offer, check out this tour of it's features.

Google Calendar
Well as predicted, Calendars would be a big thing, in a previous post Google are just about to realease a calendar application called CL2 according to TechCrunch. The interface is similar to GMail so it'll get huge uptake as people are used to it. I guess the main question I have is can you get to it using a Web Service or API because you could use this calendar system to add, edit, insert and then pull out the information using RSS.

Windows Live Mail M5
The Hotmail classic feature is mainly an update to the non-AJAX version of WLM for browsers other than IE (although, you can use the non-AJAX version in IE now too). I don’t see why they can’t just create an AJAX version compatible with the other browsers though, I mean, Gmail has shown that Firefox and the like can handle AJAX perfectly well, at most they’d lose their right-click menu. Probably even better than IE. Oh well, here’s a screenshot:

SSCLI Source Code Browser Online
Shared Source, is an umbrella term used by Microsoft for its dabbling in the open-source wave. It encompasses multiple programs that grant licensees to access the source codes from ASP.NET sample kit all the way up to the Windows itself. The license under which SSCLI is distributed does not exactly make it free software as the license fails to satisfy the four freedoms of an free software license. However, there is enough discussion on this topic and certainly nobody can argue that having access to the source code of the CLI is worse than not.

On accessing the website and logging in, the site launches an Instant Messenger window that provides access to the following gateways - Yahoo, Hotmail, ICQ and AIM. The interface is good with the ability to categorize users and IM functionality is also fast. You would see another excellent use of AJAX in this application. I think AJAX is to Web 2.0 what Javascript/Flash was to Web 1.0.

My Blog - Part 1
Change 6) I have beefed up the spam blockers on here. For about a month I had VICIOUS attacks on here, mainly because the spam was down, it made the server run at about 20% CPU , which I didn't like. So I took it down until I could clean up the code a wee bit. Which I did, now it runs and I haven't had a spam comment in about a month, not bad.
