BitTorrent Clients
For several years now, I have only tried a single bittorent client ever - BitTornado. I have heard of a lot other clients available out there, most of them seem to be more popular than the one I am currently using — there’s azureus, uTorrent, BitComet, Turbo Torrent, Bit Lord, Shareaza, etc.

Universal Binaries
Basically, there’s no ‘easy’, trivial, or even takes-a-couple-of-hours way to make most GNU configure built software create a universal binary under a PPC host at the moment; however, this universal build structure is entirely native on the x86 development systems, and the new x86 variants. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a couple grand to throw at free software that costs me money to offer every month.

WordPress: Lightbox Plugin
Pretty cool, and its particularly useful if you haven’t implemented the Javascript to handle full size images (i.e. launch in new window, etc.). And since this plugin produces overlays, it won’t trigger popup blockers either. But overlays could actually prove to be a nuisance if readers regularly view full size images and would like to open them in new windows instead. Perhaps the plugin could have an option to launch full size images in new windows as well?

Should We Boycott Google?
So maybe the time is coming for us to bid farewell to Google and its engine. To withdraw our accounts at Blogger.com. And to stop collecting our email on gmail. If the Internet is to bring genuine freedom to the world, we need to show the big companies that when it comes to the Internet, the World is bigger even than China!

PC Maintenance
To be fair, it’s not his fault all those ‘wares were on his computer. My sister also uses that computer as well. My sister refuses to switch over to Firefox because she does not like its “look” and that some of her sites won’t work in Firefox. It’s really frustrating knowing that someone is still using IE in this day and age.

Open Source Advertising
While looking up links for another post, I came across this site about Linux Software RAID. The guy has a banner ad at the top of his page for GnuCash and as much as I dislike advertising, maybe it’s a really good idea for breaking into the brand-aware consciousness of non-Open Source and Free Software people. I think if people saw what they were missing, they might do something about getting it.

Hard Cash
In terms of media, the internet has already made much headway into this domain. This is why the distribution networks are fast to work as hard as they could to fight the media distribution over the internet. If a person could make his own T.V. show, using his own technologies, and distribute it over the internet, via bittorrent, or his own server, and have it ad supported, all free, what is the appeal of regular distribution networks? Newspapers can already tell you the massive emigration from using them for classified ads since Craiglist started getting headway.

Stupidity, Stupidity, Stupidity
The same level of intelligence was on display on Richard Dawkin's anti-faith program, "The Root of All Evil?", in which Dawkins attempts (and pretty much fails) to heep his temper while fundamentalist creeps claim that the scientists they know think the world isn't 4.5 billion years old, and that Dawkins' grandchildren might laugh at him for ever thinking so. Dawkins compares the guys sermons to the Nuremberg rallies, which I think only doens't cause a larger reaction because I'm not sure he knows what the Nuremberg rallies are. Shall I tell him, or do you want to? Get it off BitTorrent if you haven't seen it.

Searchfox Closes Doors
Tonight when I logged on to my favorite RSS aggregator-reader I was presented with their Going Out of Business notice. Ouch! I am a beta tester for Searchfox and just love it. Techcrunch sent me their way, and I fell in love with after I finally understood it. It took about 3 weeks for SF to learn my reading habits, and from then on it served up my favorite subjects at the top of my list. There is no other information. Their last official blog post was in November. Before SF I used Onfolio and Blogbridge. What do you recommend I use now?

Free Software For Intel-based Macs
Read the entire article. So, Java embedding sounds sort of obscure doesn’t it? But what it means is that lots of free software I depend on for my workflow won’t work. Firefox won’t work unless you can give up Java and Flash. 3 months ETA on that. NeoOffice/J, the OpenOffice platform for Mac won’t work either, and there’s no ETA on that.

Boooo, SiteMeter
I got a bit excited today when I went over to the FatMixx SiteMeter Report page because I noticed in FireFox that the RSS icon was present in the location bar, indicating that there was an RSS feed for that page. I was hoping they did what Measure Map did, with personalized feeds for my site. I was surprised that there wasn’t an announcement on the SiteMeter blogs. So I checked out what RSS feed they were pointing at. Turns out the feed tag in the source points to the RSS feed for the SiteMeter weblog. Booo! The RSS icon is only supposed to show on pages that have RSS feeds for the content on that page. Not just that the site somewhere has an RSS feed about something. Booo again!

Dawkins Strikes Again
Which brings me on to another program I watched after comparisons were made between it and the Dawkins program. Called A Brief History of Disbelief, it was a far more thorough treatment of atheism than Dawkins was attempting (all three episodes are available via Bittorrent) and made mention of this puzzle from the Greek philosopher Epicurus:

I Know I Can Speel
I would really like to use a spell checker on all my various posting excursions on the Internet. I blog. I Whirlpool. I e-mail. Surely it would be good to have a spell checker, just to make sure I’m hitting the right buttons? I have been using the Google Firefox toolbar for its spell check feature; it’s actually the only feature I use. But it looks like it’s incompatible with Wordpress’ new ajaxified ‘Write Post’ section. Bummer.

Blocking Web Ads With A Hosts File
An old tip, but a goodie… if you don’t like working with popup blockers (or they’re not doing the job for you) grab hold of a hosts file that stops ads displaying, by fooling your computer about where the ad servers are.

Google Pack
Gripes aside, Google Pack really helped me. I assumed it would be a nice way to save time managing programs on my fiancé’s computer, but seeing as my PC is pretty much bare (it has a few games, Firefox, Tortoise SVN, InstantRails and a text editor installed), I actually found it very useful. I noticed a lot of digg.com readers commenting that Google were becoming ‘bloated’, or doing too much, but it worked nicely for me!

The Freeness Of Protopage
As of now, Protopage allows you to have frames that contain RSS Feeds (your choice and predefined sets), bookmarks/links, and a panel for sticky notes. I have not found that Protopage allows for user defined plugins or extensions, which limits its ability for expansion. They have just made it so that IE and Firefox users can use the scroll bar on their mouses to scroll down the RSS feeds, this is an example of how Protopage is still in the early stages and has quite a few things that it still needs to work out.

Apple's Safari Mistake: Choosing KHTML Over Firefox
If you recall, there were significant problems with Firefox (then called Mozilla) development two years ago. An ongoing problem was that there didn’t seem to be a lot of development …. new versions took ages to come out. But the second problem, and probably the one that scared Apple off most of all, was code bloat. Mozilla/Firefox had a LOT of code, was a big download, hogged memory, and was sloowwwww ….

Wordpress/MT/LJ Plugin For Firefox
I’ve had this installed for a couple of days now and it works pretty well! I tested it by posting a meme to my LJ account. Well, that didn’t turn out too well as it didn’t read the code for the meme correctly. Other than that, it’s pretty nifty for just basic blogging itself. You will get a small icon at the bottom of your browser window, next to the Gmail notifier, if you use it. You just click it and a small window will pop up which you can move up and down to still see the main Firefox window.

The Trouble With AJAX
While everyone is busy implementing AJAX on every webpage they administer, and while I do not deny the beautiful simplicity and aesthetic design of an AJAX powered page (just look at how nice Gmail is to use, with instant marking of read/unread messages; or how nice the IPB 2.1 registration page is..) everyone seems to have forgotten something about the original foundations of AJAX. What it is, how it works, why it is not necessarily the best of ideas… In short, why it is best left well alone.

Free Versus Freedom
In the "Open Source for Newbies" department we have yet another author taking a run at explaining the difference between "free" and "freedom." This author (David Chisnall at informit.com) does a pretty good job, as he goes to some effort to explain the 4 freedoms outlined by the Free Software Movement and how the concept of free -- as in "no cost" -- got grafted on to Open Source. Good reading if this is still a topic that causes you some consternation.
