Gmail Invitation
As previous posting, now I am trying to switch partially (to store) my email from Yahoo to Gmail. I believe that now many of us already have gmail account(s), but I think it is not too late if I would share this opportunity to others who doesn’t have. Currently I have many invitations remaining. Please leave your comment if you wish to get it one, subject to availability.

How Television Could Work
PVRs and MP3 players are already the rage. We don’t watch 80 channels of 24-hour broadcasting every day (and not only because it’s impossible). Most people have a few shows they like, and they surf channels to see them. We aren’t loyal to the networks. We don’t care if we’re seeing our favorite stuff on HBO, CNN, Fox, NBC, or TNT. We’re all about shows, not networks. So in a PVR world, it’s much easier to work bandwidth-wise. You don’t have to send 80 channels of gunk 24 hours per day to every household. You can let them bittorrent the stuff that they actually want. You can track it better, you can charge for it, consumers can pay for a subscription (we already do) and networks can pay back the hot content producers.

The Offline Web
I mainly use EverNote to stockpile info from the Net. Using the Firefox extension, I often save Web pages/articles to EverNote and categorize them using the programs' Keyword categories. I've created a number of filters so that when I save an article with certain keywords contained within it, it will automatically be saved to a certain category.

Firefox and del.icio.us
If you do decide to test it out there are a few necessities that I recommend. First, find and download the Firefox extension that allows book marking and tagging on the fly (assuming you use Firefox). Otherwise you’ll have to navigate from the site you want to bookmark to del.icio.us’ site to add it and tag it. Also figure out how to back up your critical bookmarks (maybe by tagging them as such). It has an export capability into a browser friendly version and considering the recent complaints about their outage, you might want to have a back up plan.

Switching To CentOS 4.2
I decided to go with CentOS 4.2, as CentOS is what I have installed on various servers that I admin. I backed up all the important data off the Windows box, and then started the adventure. First, download the DVD image from a torrent, which necessitates a BitTorrent client. Install the client, start the download, work on something else while it takes 6 hours to download. Burn the DVD, drop it into the PC, and reboot.

Pod What?
Now comes the question of distribution. Where can I get podcasts? One would initially go to a website that categorizes podcasts based on their content. The websites list a brief synopsis about the podcast, a link to its main website and link to its feed. The two ways of obtaining the actual audio file are manual and automatic. The manual way consists of going to the podcasts website and downloading the episodes you want to listen to. Not every website hosts the actual audio files on their servers. This is because having many people download audio from your website takes up bandwidth, which costs money. Some websites may just offer links to their bittorrent files (the concept of bittorrent will not be explained here). Automatic distribution pertains to “feeds”. Feeds (usually RSS) are links to a website that monitor it for updated content. Once new material is uploaded the feed can see it. A podcast client is used to check those feeds periodically for new material. The client can be scheduled automatically every X amount of days. The feed can download either the actual audio file or a bittorrent file. The more robust clients have bittorent support built in.

PITA Project
Moving e-mail from POP3 or IMAP to Gmail is not exactly an easy thing … nor particularly clean. It seems that, no matter what you try, there’s not a way to maintain the original message date/time stamping. So, transferred stuff ends up as “newer” than your new mail, if that makes any sense.

New Website Design
So, after having posted a website design for the Oliver Pfänder website some time ago I wasn’t really satisfied with the overall look and the design of the website for this talented musician. Therefore I sat down and came up with something new. I wanted to create a more vibrant and colorful design that reflects the music Oliver creates. The design still needs to be approved and I will be using different pictures since these ones are just the ones from the mockup version but have a look for yourself:

I Hate Exchange
Before we rolled out Exchange, our email was hosted by our website hosting provider - specifically, Net1Plus, a local company. Net1Plus is a great company, and I have nothing but praise for their services - which I also use for this site (StarKeith.net. Their web servers run a sweet version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which means that email is handled by stable, proven Linux-based software. The only time there’s a problem is when a server is down (which is rare, and Net1Plus queues the mail while the server is down so we don’t miss anything), or when there’s some sort of DNS problem (which is even more rare). We occasionally have problems sending mail because of authentication problems - most email services these days have systems in place to deal with spam and have some way of not being an “open relay” - but in general (and especially since we moved to our new office with it’s static IP address) things have been peachy-keen. Which is good, because email is arguably the most important piece of software in our office - or in any modern office these days. When email doesn’t work, people get grouchy - in the same sort of way people get grouchy when the phones don’t work, or when the power goes out. These are the sorts of things that you need to have working - and that when they don’t work, nothing can get done. They’re important - you expect them to work 100% of the time, and by and large they do.

How To Choose A Good Web Host
Most website hosting companies will have their packages grouped by the various things they offer, of course the more you get the larger the price will be. The basic package is usually around 25MB of web space. This is how much space the hosting company will allow you to have on their web server. This is with shared hosting. There will be other websites also on this server with you, each with their own packages and amounts of space.

Don't Look Down
Ok. Yeah the whole @aol.com is a great reference. What about @gmail.com? If I was working with someone on something technical and they didn’t have a gmail account (even if they don’t use it) I would think they are kind of weird. In no way would I look ‘down’ at them because they had a Shared email account. Blogspot, typepad are fine services. Many well-know people use these services because it meets their needs.

Sage For RSS
RSS on the other hand, requires little bandwidth and is one of the biggest changes I have made to my web browsing habits over the past couple of months. Before I started using RSS, I would have to click on a whole bunch of bookmarks to have my daily “update” of news. But since most sites worth reading now have RSS feeds, it makes sense to use an application or plugin to consolidate your information gathering and minimize the effort needed to retrieve that information. There’s many RSS readers out there, but the one I use is a Firefox plugin called Sage. It installs in seconds, integrates with any Live Bookmarks you may already have in your bookmarks, and allows you to take advantage of tabbed browsing and all the other goodies that Firefox has. You can even customize the look of feeds by editing a CSS template!

Here's a post by Marshall Kirkpatrick that describes a bookmarklet he created, complete with demo and link to a screencast on how to use it. This Isn't Working Out
With a paid LJ, paid website hosting, and now a paid Flickr account, and most of my blogs on Blogger (which I don’t want to move and I actually have put one on hiatus to make things a bit easier on me), I have no interest in a paid WordPress account. I had hoped this free account, despite the limited choices in templates and the inability to customize worth a damn would still be a worthwhile blogging platform but the frustrations are really getting to me. The pages are the one way I can customize this place and add versatility here, and they simply don’t work.

MPAA And Bittorrent Seal Deal
Here’s the deal. People use Bittorrent to download both legal and illegal software. The thing is, Bittorrent, developed by Bram Cohen, is mainly used by pirates all around the world. Hell, I even use it to download software and movies from TorrentSpy, Piratebay, and Mininova. No one can stop the people from using it to download illegal stuff. On the upside, there are also legitimate software available in Bittorrent. Like the stuff from Fileshack. So their solution, Bram and the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) has made a deal to take down illegal downloads from the Bittorrent Search engine. This may minimize piracy but I’m almost sure that they can never put a stop to it. If it were up to me, if I really wanted to abolish piracy, I would directly ban Bittorrent. I know it’s a big price to pay, but how far are you all willing to go to stop illegal downloads?

Silver Surfers
I wrote a short article about website design and senior citizens and posted it to the main Proimpulse site under articles. It seems like we forget a lot of times that younger people are not the only ones using the internet. We get all carried away and design websites that are complicated to use. These websites have very small text, non forgiving forms and other elements that make it difficult for the “Silver Surfers” to use them.

RIAA: Cracking Is OK If Done Correctly
Don’t even get me started about personal responsibility. Are we really the mindless sheep these people think we are? Everybody using eMule, Grokster, Limewire, Morpheus, Bittorrent, etc. . . knows exactly what they are doing. But it cuts both ways. It is not the job of a plaintiff to exact a punishment on a defendant before a trial. We have an entire court system for that. If a gun maker made a firearm that blew up when it thought it was in the hands of a criminal, what do you suppose would happen? They would be charged with murder, that’s what.

FreeDOS
Then, I saw a discussion thread on the DOS groups asking “hey, why doesn’t someone write their own free version of DOS?” Remember, this was about three years after Linus Torvalds announced his work on the Linux kernel, and by 1993 Linux had shown that free software can achieve incredible results. So in 1994, the suggestion that we could write our own free version of DOS, and give it away with the source code so others could work with it and improve it, really didn’t sound all that far-fetched.
