Can't Load Google
I have been encountering a weird problem lately. At times, my browsers (IE and Firefox) won’t load google and gmail. When this happens, the load time of other search engines slow down as well. Could there be some kind of a spyware in my PC? Or is this is a server problem? I have a couple of security programs such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, adaware and a firewall but still, it doesn’t seem safe without SP2.

Google and bing wasn't loading, but rest of internet was.
I read this post and fixed the problem.
I went here on my computer...
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
Right clicked hosts file and clicked properties and unchecked the box READ ONLY.
Then I tried to open...it asked me to choose and I chose to open with a program on my computer...NOTEBOOK.
I saw this in there...
95.64.61.131 www.google.com
95.64.61.132 www.bing.com
Some people might have others as well.
(I first copied and pasted in another text page to save in case this didn't work).
I deleted this from the file...
95.64.61.131 www.google.com
95.64.61.132 www.bing.com
and saved. Went back to Firefox and had Google and Bing!!!

Looks like all of you have several different causes. I know for a fact that there's a redirector virus that'll hit Windows based computers (try checking for google entries in the hosts file) and there's another flavor of it that'll hit OSX (yep! there are google redirect viruses for mac, too, so don't get too cozy and neglect to run an antivirus). Also, there ARE firefox/java issues with some of google's services, so try un/re-installing java and FF and that may help those of you whose problem ISN'T the redirector.

Back again. Yesterday I thought I'd resolved the problem by disabling/enabling the network connection. This failed after I'd made the comment.
I have now disabled several Extensions in Firefox and this appears to have cured the problem. If I can identify exactly which extension is at fault I'll report back. It may be a combination though.
I suggest that anyone experiencing this problem should try to eliminate their FF extensions as this seems to be the cause for me.

I've been experiencing problems loading any google.com based name (only in Firefox), google.co.uk works fine.
This problem randomly occurs after closing and then reopening Firefox.
Using the "netsh int ip reset" works fine but requires a system restart.
After getting tired of this method, I've just tried a simple disble/enable of my network connection - and this worked. So, no need for a machine restart. Just disable and then enable your connection.

Hi,
I had a similar problem. No Google searches working, and couldn't open and site that tried to access googleanalytics.com before loading.
After calling down the IT guy, who (ridiculously) started trying to install IE7 for me, claiming it was a browser issue (I'd tried EVERY different browser by this time). Tried various fixes and this worked: http://www.superantispyware.com/ found stuff none of my other antivirus/spyware software found.

This worked great, didn't even restart

Found this page via a websearch while having the same problem on another computer.
This is the solution that worked for me (Windows XP, Google wasn't working in either Firefox or IE), in case anyone else finds it useful:
- Open up a commandline (Start -> Run, type 'cmd', click OK)
- Type the following: 'netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt' and hit return
- Reboot your computer

I had this problem also, and followed the advice of one of the posters at the top to disable the Wacom plugin, and things work great now. (I also turned off a few others--like Java--at the same time).

I was having the same problem, and seem to have found a fix
FIX:
I disabled a number of extensions and add-ons, specifically: Wacom pressure sensitive driver, Facebook addon, DownloadThemAll, Session saver, and iPhotoPodcast. Works great now, not sure which was causing the issue.

I had the same problem as gmail178. Thanks for the advice by the way. All I did was go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc & delete all the files I had in that folder. There were 5. I ran registry repair wizard 2009 & it found 1 problem. It was with the sam file that I removed titled LMHOSTS. I pushed the button to fix this problem. I tried IE8 as well as Firefox 3.5.5 & all of the problems I was having with Google not loading (everything Google except Google Maps which I wccessed through searching Google with Dogpile) & Yahoo not loading after typing in something in the search engine. I am keeping the files in the recycle bin for now just to make sure nothing else quits working. The internet speed seems to have improved too.

Same thing happened to us in both IE 7.0 and Firefox...we could not load www.google.com; we could open www.yahoo.com but could not search from their site. Below is what fixed it for us:
1. Ran Spybot Search & Destroy in Safe Mode;
2. It showed a windows.fraudprotectionsuite infection;
3. Tried to remove it and it came up with the error "Access is denied to the Hosts file";
4. Opened the Hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) and found that it had numerous hosts listed.
5. Replaced the Hosts file with a correct version and deleted all others plus the backups it had created;
6. Ran the "Fix Problems" in Spybot Search & Destroy and it removed all entries in the windows.fraudprotectionsuite;
6. Restarted the computer and it works fine now.

I am using Mac OS X Leopard and I can't load google, yahoo, or youtube in either Firefox or Safari. This includes both the google and yahoo search engines.
This problem began 3-5 hours after loading the new Safari web browser. I have tried reinstalling both Safari and Firefox and it hasn't helped. I know this issue is with my Mac because the other computers on my network are able to load google, yahoo, and youtube.
I have no idea why this is happening....

This was my fix...
I unplugged my router and wireless connection, waited a few seconds, and plugged them back in just like comcast told me to do if I lost the internet. Works fine now. Very confusing that I could get to some sites and not others though.
Hope this helps at least one person.

I have not been able to load google on my home pc for 6 years...running XP pro, not sure when the problem 1st started, but when my hard drive went during a crash with windows ME, a friend reformated the computer with xp pro...and it worked great...ended up on an adult site and got a bunch of viruses and spyware. After finally getting the spyware removed...google stopped working. Everything else works....but now for some reason youtube is crashing when I try to log in....this is how i found this website.

I have a Mac (10.5.6) and can't access anything Google, Yahoo!, or Youtube on both Firefox and Safari. Google worked fine about 5 hours ago, but for some reason it won't work now. Not sure what happened or why like everyone else here. Haven't checked for viruses yet, but as I can see here maybe there's no need. If anyone finds a solution please post. Many thanks

hi, same problem.
With the Safari 3.2.1 and the firefox in my OS X 10.5.6 I can't load google and it's appliacations??
any solutions for me?
Posted by: amalia Kristic at March 13, 2009 01:28 PM
I don't think it has anything to do with our OS's, or having a virus or anything. After all we have a Mac OS X user posting this error message. Mac OS X doesn't have any viruses. Check it out if you don't believe me.
I have no idea whats the problem, but it seems its only Google that I can't load, but something more interesting about this problem is that its when I'm trying to access Google.com and it changes into Google.com.bh (I'm currently in Bahrain) *Small Island located in the Gulf*.
check to see if your web browser is trying to access a specific area within the URL. Like Google.ca or something. That could be our problem.
The only solution I have for us is well restart your router. I'm going to try that.

My symptoms:
Firefox (and IE) would load Google.com but searches would not work.
Couldn't access Yahoo.com.
Couldn't access Facebook.com.
Could access Live.com.
Could access everything normally on another computer on the network.
No unusual hosts files or entries.
No results found from several anti-virus programs.

I've been having problems searching with Google and a number of other search engines - both with Firefox and IE. They seem to stop loading, and will only work if I restart in safe mode.
I tried
(1) Open up your Windows command prompt
(2) type:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
(3) Then restart your computer.
Which failed for me - I have Vista and I think I have to be in safemode to do anything that requires administrative rights.
I then tried a number of virus-scanner type programs and the first one to solve the problem was the Spybot Search & Destroy program (run from safe mode): (
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html ).
Things seem to be working fine now (touch wood!).
The main Trojan it picked up was Virtumonde, but I'd also had Trojan.Brisv.A!inf and there was a Worm too, making it twice as difficult to get rid of.
Hope that helps anyone with the same problem

I am on a mac OS 10 - I can't load Google in firefox! The toolbar box won't work neither will a search from the site. The site itself will come up, but the research results flash very quickly and then I see "stopped" down on the status bar. The arrow will still show me the "working" symbol, but the page refuses to load.

To my mind, avast has the most user-friendly interface out of all free antivirus programs I know of, and its updates come absolutely silent. Some PC users insist that it has a poor detection rate, but AV comparatives lists avast! over Norton, so there must be a sound reason behind that. Since version 4.8 avast! claims to have anti-spyware protection included as well. I personally know a home user who switched from ESET (paid) to avast! (free), and not because NOD's subscription expired.

I think I haev the solution, as I have just fixed this problem. At the bottom of firefox it usually says connecting to www.example.com then it says waiting on www.example.com, is it getting stuck on this part? If so I know how to fix it

So this i s a very strange problem,a nd it seems could not be a new one judging by dates in this forum.
So symptomes in Firefox & Opera:
- forever loading on all search sites, no timeout.
- Google and gmail will load search page, but no results and no gmail account after logging in.
-Yahoo won't load entirely.
-ask.com will load, but not load search results.
-Dogpile goes to blank page ( not loading)
-all other non-search sites seem to work fine.
IE seems uneffected.
And all of this on only one system in my home network of 6.
I've tried AVG (full), Spybot, resting the TCP/ip Stack as described above - all to no avail.
Then I tried clearing cache/cookies just now, and it fixed access to gmail in FF3, and after restarting FF3, google returned results. but only twice... ten back to same story.
I'm fucking perplexed. Devestated that i'm using IE7 to post this. I'me been researching and experimening w/ this (w/o the help of Google) for 6 hours. Please email me @ kprojekt at gmail dot com if you have any good information on this.
Please Google.... come back, the internet is useless w/o you.

I haven't been able to load Google for about 2-3 weeks either. However I also can't get to any search engines (yahoo, msn, ask, etc.) and also I cannot upload any files on any website. No other computers on my network are affected. Sometimes my internet will mysteriously start working again, but then the problem is back within an hour or two. I've already ran several virus scans too and no cure. I'm so frustrated!

I forgot to mention...
If anyone has the same symptoms.. do not do a system restore!
I thought it was wierd that my system didn't have many restore points when I went to do this, so Ijust went to the earliest point.
After discovering the trojan with Avast!, I realised that my earliest restore point was created at the exact same time (to the minute) that I got infected with TratBHO... as far as I can tell, that opened me up for a whole other can of worms.
Can the virus create a restoe point to the infection?
Posted by: Gemma at May 22, 2008 07:26 AM
I have exactly the same problem.
I don't know a fix for it (yet) but maybe some more information to help us figure it out.
None of my virus scanners could pick anything up more than tracking cookies (I have the full version of McAfee, and adaware free)
Then I got Avast! Home edition (also free and highly recommended!!)
Avast! found a trojan on my computer called win32:TratBHO
I think it managed to delete it but I am still having the same problem with google and gmail.
I am going to try the resetlog fix above now that the virus has (hopefully) been removed.
Another wierd thing is that if I am logged out of my gmail account, the search function in google starts working again. This is not just my account but any account I log in on my computer with.
Sorry I couldn't help fix it, but maybe the extra info will help someone realise what it is?
Run Avast and see if you have the same trojan?

I am having the same problem - it loads the main google page but not searches and doesn't load the MSN homepage.
I have windows vista.
I tried the reset, first time it didn't work, second time it did. But then I turned my computer off last night and back on now and it is having problems again. Do I have to reset every time?
what is going on here.
Is microsoft looking for people to pay for fixes for this?
I paid way too much for this not to work.

Hey,
here is the solution that will work 100 procent sure,
i did everythin from scanning to system restore,
Resetting the TCP/IP Stack in Windows XP
Use the following steps to reset the TCP/IP Protocol stack. This makes Internet Explorer and Internet networking behave as new installations.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open field, type: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
3. Click OK when done.
4. Restart the computer and log onto the Internet to test for functionality: If the error goes away, you are finished.
try it,
greets mos

This happened to me too.
I haven't been able to load gmail or google.
It started about two weeks ago on one of my xp machines with FireFox and IE7. It would go out and then come back very slowly. I ran Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-aware, AVG virus scan, ATF Cleaner, checked the hosts file, then ran an online virus scan with Trend Micro's HouseCall. Then it went away for about a day.
Then I noticed it must of jumped the network onto my main system. It really seems to mess up FireFox! Internet Explorer is effected mildly. Although it took it a few more days to effect SeaMonkey "Mozilla's new Netscape Browser". So now all of my browsers seem to be infected. I ran all of the same scans and checks on my main system and a few more. It almost seems that it adapted. So now I can't kill it.
Funny that something so strong like this only has the evil mission of blocking google and gmail.
Maybe Yahoo or MSN made it... lol
so if anyone has any new info or suggestions It would be greatly appreciated.
(oh yeah; when a word is underlined. you can right click on it to get spelling correction suggestions)

(Remove the quotes from both of the lines you type.)
For more details about what this does, see the Microsoft KB article --> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 . What you are doing is resetting Windows' TCP/IP stack to its defaults, as if you had removed and reinstalled it.

Someone tell me how to load Google on Vista ! Wall Street Journal 6/11/07 ran an article stating that Microsoft doesnt allow search bars in vista that consumers can use to initiate searches to work with destop search software other than Microsoft. A microsoft spokesman said it is possible to turn off its own desktop search feature, though said it was difficult. Other complaints state that computer's performance was slowed-down if a used used a second desktop-search software. It's back to court for Microsoft.
